As you might already know, encouraging creativity in kids is at the heart of our mission here at Wonder Workshop. That’s why we were thrilled when the Children’s Creativity Museum in San Francisco asked us to host a workshop as part of Creativity Day 2015. Held on Saturday, April 18, this year’s theme was STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) Powered Creativity!
Dash, Dot, and their friends (aka the Wonder Workshop team) excitedly greeted hundreds of guests who took part in activities such as:
Crafty Creature Creator: Kids used our Building Brick Extensions and arts & crafts supplies to turn Dash & Dot into creatures that previously lived only in their imaginations! These creatures were then used to navigate obstacles and mazes, and even danced in robot music videos!
Obstacle Course: Using Blockly or Path, kids designed algorithms to navigate around obstacles, and set up new courses to challenge their friends!
Maze: An exercise in creative problem solving, novice programmers used simple drive commands to chart Dash’s course through the maze. More experienced coders could make Dash respond to sensor input or use loops to go around corners and avoid running into walls!
Robot Bowling: One of Dash’s favorite activities is to see how many bowling pins can be knocked over in the fewest Blockly blocks! Kids had a blast challenging themselves in Robot Bowling.
Scribble-bots: After using Building Brick Extensions, LEGO® bricks, and rubber bands to create a marker holder, Dash was programmed using Path and Blockly to create drawings and write special messages.
Special Announcement! Coming this June…
Dash, Dot, and the Wonder Workshop team had a fantastic time at Creativity Day. We are also incredibly excited to announce that starting this June, Dash & Dot will be featured in their own permanent exhibit at the Children’s Creativity Museum! We are stoked that the Children’s Creativity Museum will be making coding more accessible to the community around us. Stay tuned for updates and announcements!
