The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee report has issued a stark warning that the UK is facing a digital skills ‘crisis’ and that more needs to be done to address the knowledge gap.

Their research found that over 12 million UK adults did not possess basic digital skills – with 5.4 million never having accessed the internet at all. The report also suggested that the UK will need almost another three-quarters of a million workers with digital skills by 2017. These skills are not limited to digital marketing, however; the committee suggests that 90% of all jobs now require some form of digital skills.

The Science and Technology Committee chair, Nicola Blackwood said: “The UK leads Europe on tech, but we need to take concerted action to avoid falling behind. We need to make sure tomorrow’s workforce is leaving school or university with the digital skills that employers need.”
