Will you be attending the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money Aug. 13-17 in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Ill.?

I will be there for the duration. I hope to see you there as well. National conventions are great fun. There are so many events to attend and people to meet that it is hard to be bored. With so much to do, it is harder to pace myself. I am a bit like a little kid who refuses to go to bed because I am so interested in what is going on around me.

However, one reason that I have to make an effort to be reasonable is that Numismatic News sponsors an annual breakfast on Thursday morning to honor Numismatic Ambassadors and to induct new Ambassadors into this select group, which was founded nearly 40 years ago in 1974 when Californian Charlie Colver was given the first award.

This year’s Ambassador breakfast will commence precisely at 8 a.m. Aug. 15 in Room 22 of the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center. It will adjourn precisely at 9 a.m.

You might think I use the word “precisely” too much as I write the details of the breakfast, but I assure you I do not.

Numismatic Ambassadors are very involved people. They have other meetings to go to and some even come to the breakfast after attending another meeting.

I can only admire their stamina. But more than that, I respect their schedules.

The breakfast is designed to last exactly an hour. There is a lot to do. Eating, of course, is a major function, but because there is no other Ambassador gathering during the year, it is an opportunity to catch up a little bit with each other. Every single Ambassador has the opportunity to introduce him or herself and say a few words of greeting.

New Ambassadors are called forward and given award plaques to signify that they are now a member of a very select group of hobby volunteers who have given years of service to numismatic organizations and events. Their work is what makes the hobby hum. For an hour, they can relax and be served.

It is my privilege to keep everything running smoothly with the help of others from Krause Publications.

It is my hope to see many old friends at the Ambassador breakfast. I would like to remind them to email me to confirm that they will be attending as well as to let me know if they also will be bringing a guest. My email is david.harper@fwmedia.com. Ambassadors who plan to attend can also confirm their plans by telephoning Debbie Bradley at (715) 445-2214, extension 13646. Please contact us no later than Aug. 2.

It has been said that there is no such thing as a free lunch. This breakfast is free to Ambassadors, but their many years of volunteer service makes this meal anything but free. Attendees have earned their place at the table.

If you are not now an Ambassador, perhaps someday you will be. You now know that on the Thursday of ANA convention week you will not go hungry.
