Winter is on the way and, while many of us will be preparing for a hectic festive season, it could be the perfect time for a relaxing break to Geneva.

The Swiss capital has a reputation for luxury, with its outstanding scenery, deluxe hotels and historic charm making it one of the most picturesque cities in the world.

Thousands visit to take advantage of the resort’s magnificent ski resorts, but there is more to Geneva than its wintersports facilities. Here are just some reasons why Switzerland could be the ideal destination this winter.

1. Take in some majestic scenery

One factor that sets Geneva apart from all the rest is its landscape. With mountains as far as the eye can see, there are plenty of excellent photo opportunities and some unforgettable walking routes to explore.

Whether you take a boat ride across the stunning Lake Geneva or enjoy a spectacular view of the city from the top of Mont Saleve, you are sure to experience nature at its finest.

What’s more, there are plenty of parks scattered across the city to explore, including Des Bastions and La Grange, where travellers can look forward to peace and tranquility.

2. Enjoy some outstanding food

Geneva is home to a selection of outstanding restaurants, offering food from all over the world, including Indian, Chinese and Mexican dishes.

Bistro de la Tour is one of the leading eateries in the city, serving up some delicious French and European dishes for affordable prices. If fine dining is what you’re interested in, Le Chat-Botte is one of the top options, providing a first class experience and some mouth-watering European foods.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for something more casual, Inglewood offers some of Geneva’s best burgers and American cuisine.

3. Admire breathtaking architecture

Along with its wonderful scenery and surroundings, Geneva is home to some breathtaking architecture.

The city’s medieval Old Town dates back centuries and continues to attract tourists looking for a peaceful walk in one of the most unspoiled spots of Europe.

Bourg-de-Four Square is one of the most popular sites and remains the oldest place in Geneva. Previously used as a Roman marketplace, the space features medieval fountains and a fantastic selection of restaurants and coffee shops.

Winter is a fantastic time to visit, too. Expect marvellous Christmas decorations all across the Old Town, ensuring a wonderfully cosy winter atmosphere.

4. Of course, the skiing!

Last but certainly not least, the skiing facilities across Geneva are truly fantastic. Unbelievable resorts such as Samoens, Les Brasses and Le Grand Bornand are just some of the many resorts around an hour away and provide slopes to suit all abilities.

Therefore, whether you’re an advanced skier looking for a new challenge, or a first-timer hoping for a peaceful winter break, there are plenty of options to help your skills improve.

Samoens is part of the Grand Massif region and is one of five interlinked villages along with Flaine, Les Carroz, Morillon, Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval. However, with so many outstanding resorts to choose from, it is vital to do a bit of research beforehand, as Geneva’s stunning landscape leaves you spoilt for choice.
