Summer may be winding down, but that doesn’t mean we’re ready to pack away our beach gear just yet. Needless to say, we were delighted when ModCloth customer Elizabeth emailed us about a retro-inspired shoot she photographed, starring ModCloth’s own Bathing Beauty Two Piece Swimsuit. Read on for more of Elizabeth’s vintage-inspired photos, and for our quick Q&A with this talented photographer!
We’re smitten with your photos. What drew you to photography?
Thank you! Photography has always been an interest of mine, but that interest grew after I had my own wedding photographed six years ago. I really fell in love with taking photos and editing them and my love slowly turned into the passion it is today.
Your portfolio showcases such a wonderful variety of subject matter– from wedding portraits, to fine art photography– do you have a favorite subject to work with?
I definitely love to photograph love! Weddings and engagement sessions are by far my favorite subjects!
Did you always want to be a photographer?
Not at all! I really didn’t develop a strong desire until a few years ago. I saw so many other photographers doing what they love and making a career out of it. That really inspired me to go for it and I’m so glad I did!
What do you do to stay creatively inspired? Do you work in other mediums, outside of photography?
Other than photography, I really enjoy crafting and sewing. I think they definitely keep me inspired and give me a different kind of fulfillment that photography does. The majority of my inspiration really does come from finding new and interesting things to photograph, though.
Any favorite artists or photographers you turn to for inspiration?
I definitely have a sweet spot for Shannon Phillips of Imago Vita Photography. She was one of the first photographers that I ever followed and a lot of my desire to pursue photography came from an appreciation for her work. Lately, I’m completely enamored by Logan Cole Photography and Three Nails Photography.
We’re head over platform heels for the retro-inspired swim shoot you did, which featured a ModCloth swimsuit and accessories — what was your inspiration for the shoot?
I really had been wanting to do a retro styled shoot for a long time. I had worked with the model previously and knew her look would work perfect for the shoot. Really, it was a celebration of summer and of awesome retro/vintage style. ModCloth clothing and accessories never disappoint!
Your photos have beautiful backdrops and settings. Do you scout for locations? How do you know when a place will be perfect for a photo shoot?
Thank you! Yes, I regularly scout for locations. Really, there are a lot of factors when it comes to picking the perfect spot. The most important thing I look for is where the sun falls in relation to the area I want to shoot. This particular session was shot on an overcast day, but typically I love to back-light my subjects, giving a dreamy and warm look to my photos. Other than that, I look for locations that are slightly overgrown and filled with character.
Thanks for sharing your work with us, Elizabeth!
