If you live out west or are heading in the direction of the Wild Atlantic Way next week and are looking for an event that you can bring the little ones to, the Galway Races Summer Event at the Galway Racecourse could be just the thing. Ireland’s premiere racing festival runs from Monday, July 27th until Sunday, the 2nd of August.
Gates open at 2.30pm on Monday, with the races themselves starting at 5:15pm and running throughout the week. While the entire Galway Races Summer Festival is kid-friendly, with a warm and welcoming family atmosphere, Sunday is specifically Family Day and is sometimes referred to as Mad Hatters Day. Kids get in free on Family Day, which is great news for the budget-conscious activity planner.
There will be plenty of on-site amusements for kids, including face painting, slides and bouncing castles. There is also the extremely popular Mad Hatters Competition, with prizes for the children and adults who come equipped with the best and most inventive hats of the festival.
Now that you have a great day (or maybe even a week?) out penciled in the diary, what are you going to wear? Read on for some race day inspiration you can really bet on!
The Ultimate Race Day Outfit
Our top choice for race season is this French Connection Stripe Shift Dress, which would look great underneath this elegant Definitions Ponte Jacket. If you’ve ever been to the races before, you know that bringing both a jacket and an umbrella is essential, no matter how good the weather forecast looks the day before. Add on some sparkly bits with this Gold Tone Beaded Bracelet and this Fiorelli Pastel Flower Necklace.
Next, think long and hard about your choice of footwear. Super-thin heels seem like a great idea…until you’re sinking into the grass and standing at a 45 degree angle to the ground. A fine balance between style and comfort must be struck! I reckon these Nude Platform Court Shoes from So Fabulous fit the bill perfectly. They’re also a dead ringer for a pair that Kate Middleton is always seen wearing – and she’s one cool mother who knows a thing or two about dressing up for elegant equestrian events!
Put your Money on Hard Working Accessories
Another accessory to be methodical about is your handbag. If you plan on bringing the kids, you need to have enough space in your bag for hand wipes (to wipe off any ketchup spills in S’macs – Galway’s most revered eatery) and other kiddie essentials.
This Structured Tote Bag from Dune is both stylish and practical. For a cool pair of shades, we love these Ray-Ban Jackie O Sunglasses in tortoiseshell. Finally, add some summery glam to your look by applying some Bourjois ‘Pinking of It’ Colour Boost Lipstick and doing some loose waves with this Remington CI2725 Anywhere Curls Styler.
