Welcome to a new month and to fall! (I know it started late last month, but it’s really starting to feel like fall in earnest now.) We have a selection of new October sales for your consideration, plus a post on easy ways to update your decor for the new season. But hey, it’s Friday! You know what that means, right? Time for design inspirations!

DiscoDisco

from Inhabitat

Say hello to the 21st century version of the disco ball. This is DiscoDisco, a series of acrylic fins topped with LEDs that can be programmed to change color and pulsate in time to sounds like music, fingers snapping, clapping, you name it. Developed by Haberdashery with Alex Asseily and Goodwin Hartshorn, DiscoDisco was showcased at Designjunction in London but can be crafted in different shapes and used for other installations!

Nagyerdei Viztorony

from The Spaces

A century-old water tower in Hungary now has a second use: while it still supplies water to the University of Debrecen, this tower now features a bar, cafe, shop, gallery, observation deck and a tall climbing wall that is wrapped around the center pillar. On the observation deck, visitors can see a beautiful forest and a new sports stadium, among other things. Instead of just being something that people see in the distance but never interact with, this water tower is now a part of its community. Cool!

Hobbit Treehouse

from Curbed

Lord of the Rings fans, let me hear you! This hobbit-themed treehouse is in South Dakota and is available for rent with a 3-night minimum. Enter through a circular door to an open-concept space with a fireplace, cozy couch, refrigerator that has been cleverly painted to look like a tree and “leaves” on the ceiling leading up to the sleeping loft. You gotta admire their attention to detail here.

Glanhof Housing

from Inhabitat

Not only does this Austrian housing complex remind me of Pez candy, it’s also solar-powered! Glanhof is located in Klagenfurt and every single apartment is subsidized, showing that cool, green design shouldn’t be just for the well-off. Every unit has a balcony that faces an internal courtyard

Yo!

from Designboom

No, I’m not talking about the frivolous app Yo, which allowed you to send the two-letter greeting to your friends…and that was all. I’m talking about Yo!, a collection of lamps that really admires the classic shape of the standard light bulb by leaving it exposed. But to cut down on glare, Yo! comes with cute little baseball caps that you can put on the bulb. There are a few styles of cap to choose from. Karakt, the maker of Yo!, also encourages customers to use LED bulbs that have the classic shape.

Solarise

from Curbed

At Chicago’s Garfield Park Conservatory, lighting installations by Luftwerk accentuate the beauty of the glassy, haystack-like structure and what’s inside, too! Solar-powered LED strips on the exterior “sway” based on the wind speed around the building. Displays of gate-like mirrors create an awesome look. Red and blue petals shine bright in the sunlight. Above the cacti, there’s a mobile of sharp acrylic sheets. I like the water droplet chandelier! Even better: Solarise is staying at the conservatory for an entire year.

Meat West

from Contemporist

While Meat West sounds like it should be the name of a butcher shop operated by Kanye West (imagine the opulence!), it’s actually a restaurant in what used to be an Amsterdam tram repair depot. You can still see the tracks in the floor! The bright, high-ceilinged space features a few different ways to sit: curved booths with dividers and individual collections of wall lamps, tables with dividers and a bar with some very good under-countertop lighting. Gray, white and black are the dominant colors here, creating a classic look that’s just delicious.

TripAdvisor HQ

from Officelovin

Ever used TripAdvisor? I know I just did recently to book a hotel. Well, here’s where the magic happens: a shiny new headquarters in Needham, Massachusetts, outside Boston. The building features a beautiful glassy ceiling in the centrally-located ‘forum,’ which also has the stairs-that-are-also-seats-for-big-meetings that’s very popular these days. Corridors on the other levels face the forum (and in one photo, it looks like a baseball game is on the TVs–I’ll go ahead and assume that’s the Red Sox). Green is the company color and it’s everywhere, also taking the form of plant walls! I like the Europe-themed breakout space and the awesome copper pendants by the pizza oven. 5 stars.

Dadong Art Center

from Designboom

This large, funnel-adorned space is the Dadong Art Center in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. It’s meant to be a stylish gathering place for people in the city to hang out, talk and enjoy some culture. The funnels are meant to help protect visitors from extreme weather conditions like torrential rain or super bright sunshine. (Plus, at night, they become colorful huge lanterns!) People use this outdoor area for dance, tai chi, impromptu games, outdoor classes and other fun. Inside, there’s a theater, rehearsal hall, gallery and more.

Quinn

from Officelovin

PR agency Quinn’s New York City office has some terrific style. Large drum pendants, navy blue velvet loveseats, a lounge that looks like a living room, a cool minimalist chandelier in the meeting room, big orb chandeliers…This office looks downright cozy and comfy!

Enjoy your weekend! Stay dry and safe if you might be affected by Hurricane Joaquin.
