It is not unusual to see managers experiment with their line-ups during pre-season and give young players a chance to test themselves alongside senior professionals – especially following an international tournament when many big stars are arriving back to their clubs later than usual.

This summer you can expect plenty of new faces to be trying to impress at their respective clubs ahead of the new campaign. Here are five to keep an eye on.

Timothy Fosu Mensah

As last season proved there are no shortage of young talents at Manchester United but Timothy Fosu-Mensah is one of the most exciting and potentially in line to profit the most from the lack of a convincing right-back at the club.

Matteo Darmian’s place in the side isn’t secure and, alongside Antonio Valencia, 18-year-old Holland international Fosu-Mensah is set to challenge him this season.

Alex Iwobi

Arsene Wenger has already suggested he is going to give a number of his players extended breaks following Euro 2016, and with Alexis Sanchez injured for the opening weeks of the season Alex Iwobi will be given a chance to cement a place in the Arsenal team.

The 20-year-old forward burst on to the scene last season and has the potential to establish himself as one of the most exciting young talents in the Premier League.

Reece Oxford

Linked with Manchester City and Manchester United, the England Under-19 international showed what he can do for West Ham last season but struggled for game time. However, he captained the Hammers to the Premier League Under-21 cup showing his massive potential.

One year on there is nothing to suggest the 17-year-old who can play in defence or midfield isn’t capable of having another crack at regular football for the Hammers, or elsewhere.

Brendan Galloway

How to impress your new manager Lesson one – keep a clean sheet and score the winning goal in his first match in charge. That’s exactly what 20-year-old centre-back Brendan Galloway did in Everton’s friendly win against Jablonec.

With John Stones set to leave Goodison Park there could soon be a vacancy in defence and Ronald Koeman may not have to look far to find a good candidate for the role.

Ola Aina

Chelsea don’t have a proven track record of bringing through young players but Ola Aina made enough of an impression during Antonio Conte’s first game in charge to suggest he is worthy of a place in the Blues’ squad this season.

With Cesar Azpilicueta and Baba Rahman in front of him the path to the first team seems crowded but it is not difficult to imagine Aina overtaking the unconvincing Rahman and earning some playing time if he can continue to look good during pre-season.
