Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt were on board but the biggest name of all – David Beckham – was missing.

Before now no explanation has been given as to why this previously tight-knit group of friends didn’t take the project on with Beckham involved.

He said: “The conversation was had. Becks was busy with trying to get an MLS franchise so the timing wasn’t great which we understood.

“He was busy and still is busy. It was a shame.”
