Below are the Top 5 Enterprise Social solutions in 2016, according to our user community.

Sharepoint

“Sharepoint has conquered the enterprise intranet…it’s present in 80% of the Fortune 100; and plays a prominent intranet role in about 70% of knowledge worker intranets (either powering the main intranet portal, or delivering associated collaboration sites and/or document repositories”, writes Toby Ward, CEO of a Tech Consulting Company.

Room for Improvement

Technical Writer Caressa Naidoo argues that although SharePoint Designer “enables creating workflows easily…they produce errors at times. There seems to be glitches which require workarounds to sort out.”

Atlassian Confluence

“DocOps is a leading edge approach to technical content. We could not have done this without Confluence…We are able to add 3rd party plugins and overall collaborative abilities”, writes James Turcotte.

Systems Specialist Hristo Damyanov describes that “before using Confluence, we have had the documentation spread across multiple shared devices and emails. Confluence gave us a chance to re-arrange the documents into a single repository and group the information logically in home page(s). I have called our homepage a one-stop-shop for all team related links.”

Room for Improvement

When asked about room for improvement in Confluence, Damyanov argues that “surprisingly enough the text editor is very limited in its functionality and given the fact that so many forum platforms and websites have mastered this tool…it lacks basics such as text highlighting, and adjusting the text size and working with tables is a nightmare…I would like to see more plugins and additional functionality such as embedding of other pages, drop down menus, insert buttons, and page templates.”

Liferay Digital Experience Platform

Jason Fahy shares that “the product has helped our members and communities to freely connect, share knowledge, develop initiatives and share expertise in a secure environment.”

Fahy suggests that “the community and collaboration features such as forums, library, wikis, events and ideas” are Liferay’s most valuable features.

Room for Improvement

However, adds Fahy, “Liferay does currently lack a good integrated analytics package, automation, and filtering.”

Another Liferay user argues that “the core code base needs refactoring. It’s very hard to understand it when trying to do customizations…Data integrity should be at the database level (normalization/foreign keys) and not at the application level.”

Yammer

Bob Crozier finds Yammer’s most valuable feature to be “the ability to reach all parts of the organisation to share ideas and best practices…getting people to first share their ideas, and then for others to then respond and help out has been a key feature of our Yammer usage.”

Room for Improvement

Crozier points to post editing abilities and version control as areas that could use improvement. “Some of these issues have to do with training and changing entrenched behaviours”, he explains.

Drupal

“Drupal is an open source content management system which provides an easy installation process, a good range of modules for features’ expansion, as well as a supportive community that will help resolve issues that you face with Drupal” shares IT Consultant Ioannis Syrgios.

Room for Improvement

Syrgios elaborates that “One of the things that Drupal needs to improve is the interface. It needs to become more user friendly. It is not as rich in terms of modules as WordPress is, but it is getting there. If you have a high traffic site and speed is important, to optimize Drupal you will probably need an expert.”

“Optimizing Drupal as a high performance site, is not an easy task. You have many options but the most effective ones require server and settings modifications”, adds Syrgios.
