Selecting the wallpaper for your HTC is often one of the most personal choices we make for our phone. It could be a photo of our kids, a shot from our special holiday spot, or the crest of the football team we live for. Here are a few ways to change your wallpaper.

Changing your wallpaper

To change your wallpaper, go to the “Settings” menu and select the “Personalize” section. To change your home screen wallpaper, tap “Wallpaper” at the top of the list.

In the window that pops up, you can choose from three categories of wallpapers:

“HTC Wallpapers” – A selection of images pre-installed on your phone.

“Live wallpapers” – Animated wallpapers, from the current weather to photos taken with your phone.

“Gallery” – Other images, either taken with your camera or loaded from other locations.

If you’ve loaded your wallpaper from another source, such as downloaded from a web site, choose “Gallery” and your image will likely be in the “All downloads” collection. Open the collection and tap on the image you want. Resize the image by tapping and dragging on the blue box and finally press “Done”.

Transfer and Set Wallpaper using HTC Get Started

One helpful way to get wallpapers from your computer to your HTC is by using the HTC Get Started tool.

Using this process requires some initial set-up:

Make sure you’ve signed into your HTC Sense account on your HTC smartphone. In your “Settings” select “Accounts & sync”.

If you don’t see “HTC Sense” in the list of accounts, press the “+” icon near the top of your screen, choose HTC Sense, and sign in. If you do not have an HTC Sense account, you can create one here.

Now, let’s use the Get Started tool:

Go to start.htcsense.com, choose your country, and on the following screen select your phone model and mobile carrier. Please note that the get started tool is not available for all phones and carriers.

You will now be on the initial screen where you can choose from different personalization options. You can skip this section by clicking on “Wallpaper” in the left-hand menu.

In the wallpaper section, you can choose from the list of provided wallpapers. Or, you can upload your own by clicking the “Upload Custom Wallpaper” button. One good reason to use the HTC Get Started tool is you can crop and rotate your wallpaper, getting a preview of exactly what the image will look, before transferring it.

Once you have your wallpaper, click the “Skip to Finish” link at the bottom right of the screen. After signing in to your HTC Sense account, a notification will be sent to your phone.

Finally, on your phone, you should see an “HTC” icon in your notifications bar. Pull down the notification panel and tap on the notification “Apply your phone settings”. Your phone will automatically apply all of your new settings, including the new wallpaper.

The great part of using the HTC Get Started tool is you can use it to manage a wide variety of other features, from setting up your BlinkFeed stream, selecting custom ringtones, to adding email accounts, and much more.

Home screen vs lock screen wallpapers

On your HTC, your home screen is where you place app icons and widgets. The lock screen is what you see before unlocking your device. Sometimes a wallpaper looks great on the home screen, but after adding widgets and apps, the screen can look a little cluttered.

Fortunately, you can set a different wallpaper for your home and lock screens. In the “Personalize” section of the “Settings” menu, tap on “Lock screen style”. Swipe to “Wallpaper” (the left-most option) and tap “Settings”, then “Use custom wallpaper”. Finally, use the process for selecting a wallpaper explained above.

Creating your own wallpaper

If you have an idea for your own wallpaper, here are a few tips to make sure it looks great:

The HTC One has one of the best screens of any smartphone, so make sure you keep the resolution high. A 72 dpi resolution, 24-bit PNG, with dimensions of 1080px wide by 1920px high will typically provide the best results.

When designing a wallpaper, think about the placement of on-screen interface elements. For lock screen wallpapers, a darker color will accentuate the clock and notification bar elements. For the home screen, detailed backgrounds with hard edges can make it more difficult to read app titles.
