Continue the reading progress your child gained in school by taking them to the library this summer. By showing excitement and sharing in curiosity of books, you will help your child enjoy reading, and not just see it as “work” or a subject in school. We are very fortunate in our area to have local libraries which have many programs and events to enjoy this summer, plus we’ve got some tips for your trip to your local library.

Schedule Regular Library Visits

Regularly scheduled visits to the library give your children a routine to look forward to this summer. Build anticipation about the library visit by talking about it in advance and mark the days on a calendar so your child can see. Check out your local library and arrange these visits around story time. This is a fantastic way for your child to meet the librarians as well.

Take Part in Summer Reading Programs and Other Library Events

Not only do our local libraries have excellent summer reading programs, but there are other fun events you can participate in as well. Here’s a list of local libraries with events for the whole family.

• Cedar Rapids Public Library
• Coralville Public Library
• Iowa City Public Library
• Kalona Public Library
• Lisbon Public Library
• Marion Public Library
• Mount Vernon’s Cole Library
• North Liberty Community Library
• Washington Public Library
• Wellman-Scofield Public Library

Prepare for you Library Visit

As you prepare for your visit to your local library, set the expectations for your visit. Go over how many books you can check out, what a “library voice” means, and how long you will spend at the library. Don’t forget to take a nice recyclable bag with handles to bring your books home in!

Teach Your Children Good Borrowing Etiquette

Explain to your children that borrowing means you will have to take good care of things you use so they are returned in the same condition they were borrowed. Teach them the importance of being respectful of items and make sure crayons, glue, markers, stickers, etc are not near the library books. Consider marking your calendar with the due dates for your books at the library and make your child a part of that habit so they learn responsibility.

Not only is the library a great place to explore books, but many libraries have CD and DVD rentals available as well. One of the most exciting areas of the library is often the children’s section, making it a great stop for the family during summer. Libraries have programs for teens and adults as well, so the entire family can enjoy reading together!

Let us know what books you’re reading or how your children are doing by sharing a picture with us on our social media channels with the #SummerReadingProgram2016. We’d love to see pictures and hear recommendations from the books and programs you find at your local library!
