If you live in a smoke control area your choice of wood-burning stoves is restricted by the law.

Not so long along, it would have been impossible to have a stove of any description, but in recent years DEFRA has approved appliances that are exempt from the ban on burning wood in smoke control areas because they have been tested to demonstrate that they will not have a negative effect on the air quality.

Fortunately, there are now some outstanding stoves now available that are approved by DEFRA. Here are five outstanding wood-burning stoves that are ideal for smaller rooms or compact properties.

Aarrow DEFRA Ecoburn Flexifuel Stove

Obviously the green credentials of this Aarrow stove are set out in its name. That’s backed up by its performance, including the eponymous Ecoburn. This ensures that as much of the flammable gas produced by your fuel as possible is burnt before it goes up the chimney.

Aesthetically, this appliance comes in the sleek, steel lines that are found throughout the Aarrow range. Find out more.

Dimplex Westcott 5 SE Wood Burning Stove

The Dimplex Westcott is a classically-styled wood-burning stove boasting timeless looks. The stove body is in cast iron and includes corrugated detailing to the front and sides.

Its 5kW heat output is suitable for snug to average-sized rooms. Find out more.

Carron 4.7 kW Cream Enamel DEFRA Multifuel Stove

Something a bit different from Carron, a brand with great pedigree and heritage in wood-burning stove manufacturing. This model is available in several colour options, including the cream enamel finish we’re featuring here.

It is made from robust cast iron and comes in a simple, clean design. Find out more.

Dimplex Langbrook 5 SE Multi Fuel Wood Burning Stove

The second Dimplex stove on this list is quite different from the previous one. Whereas the Westcott is classic in style, the Langbrook is ulta-modern.

It’s somehow curved, yet boxy, giving a distinctive and very unusual appearance. It includes polished chrome handles, which are equally modern. Find out more.

Carron Dante 5 kW Matt Black DEFRA Multifuel Stove

Like the other Carron stove on this list, the Dante has clean, simple lines and is unfussy. But it is quite different in appearance, particularly because of that rounded, almost barrel-like profile. It also has a slightly higher heat output, but only by 0.3kW

Again, there are plenty of colour variations, but we’re bringing you the matt black version here. Find out more.
