Fleetwood: fishing, friendly and Fisherman’s Friend

Fleetwood, the largest town in the Wyre region, fringes the Irish Sea and Morecambe Bay and has long been associated with fishing and friendly seaside tourism. Many of the records on Deceased Online reflect the history, economy and occupations of the area’s residents.

Perhaps the most famous son of Fleetwood was a pharmacist but he truly became a friend of the fishermen. In 1865 James Lofthouse developed a strong menthol and eucalyptus liquid for fishermen to take on stormy, freezing trips into the North Atlantic and he later made easy-to-take lozenges fishermen called their friends.

Fisherman’s Friend is today a renowned global brand – 5 billion lozenges per year – still manufactured in Fleetwood by the Lofthouse family. James Lofthouse, who died in 1906, is buried in a family grave in Fleetwood Cemetery. See: http://www.fishermansfriend.com/en-gb/heritage/
