Person Controller by David Baddiel
This was an amazing story that totally captured my imagination and when I was reading it, I believed that anything was possible.
Elllie and Fred are twins who love video games, so when they see a brand new controller they know they have to get it. But this new controller is like no other, it can control people! They soon become addicted to this mysterious controller and use it to change their appearance and get special powers. They also use it against mean bullies Isla and Morris only to discover they have one too!
Will Ellie and Fred be able to save the day without the controller and discover the heroes inside themselves? I really enjoyed this book and I hope David Baddiel brings out another book soon!
Superhero Street by Phil Earle
In this hilarious, exciting and action-packed book we are introduced to ten-year old Michael J Mouse who dreams of being a superhero , his 5 brothers (triplets and twins), his mother who’s a lollipop lady and his father who works as a magician. They all live in a town called Seacross on Storey Street.
When his mother unexpectedly foils a robbery carried out by a man and his sister robbing a shop, with nearly a million pounds worth of jewelery, she and Mouse are heroes.
Mouse forms a group for people who want to be super but among them is the girl robber determined to get her hands on a priceless diamond . Will Mouse and his superhero friends save the day once more?
I adored the illustrations by the author Phil Earle and I thought this book was even better than his book Demolition Dad!
Awful Auntie by David Walliams
Awful Auntie is David Walliams seventh book and I think it is his funniest. It tells the story of Lady Stella Saxby, whose parents, Lord and Lady Saxby, were killed in a car crash. She is now the sole heir to Saxby Hall and is tortured by her awful Aunt Alberta who is incredibly evil and will stop at nothing to take Stella’s inheritance from her. The ancient butler, Gibbon is of no help to Stella. He lives in his own little world, serving up slippers as buttered crumpets, shaking hands with a pot plant he refers to as “Major”, and talking into a lampshade as though it is a telephone. As for Alberta, she really is an awful auntie with no redeeming qualities. She sleeps with her pet Great Bavarian Mountain Owl called Oswald and she also has several stuffed owls. She will do absolutely anything to own Saxby Hall, including killing Stella’s parents and trying to kill Stella. When Stella is locked in the cellar by her scheming aunt, she befriends a ghostly chimney sweep called Soot. Soot is just the kind of loyal friend Stella really needs and together they plan to outwit her awful, cheating Aunt Alberta. I love the way good eventually triumphs and I would definitely recommend this book to readers who want a good laugh and who don’t mind murder and some evil deeds mixed into the story. The illustrations are brilliant and really bring the story to life.
How to Look for a Lost Dog by Ann M. Martin
How To Look For A Lost Dog by Anne M. Martin is such an amazing book. It tells the story of Rose, an eleven year old, autistic child who loves homophones and is always trying to think up new ones. She also loves prime numbers and depends upon order and routines to get through her daily life. Her mother left when Rose was two and her father finds it hard to understand Rose and is not very caring. Luckily she has her Uncle Weldon who is very kind and patient. When her father brought her home a dog that he had found wandering without a collar, Rose called her Rain and she helps Rose cope with her autism and to be accepted by other children. One night after a hurricane, her father lets Rain out to go to the toilet, but Rain does not come back. Rose is very upset at losing Rain and then other things start going wrong in Rose’s life. She never gives up however on finding Rain and she works out an exact and focused plan to search every dog shelter. Rose grows and learns a lot along the way and has an important decision to make. I really enjoyed this moving story and I loved the ending. This book helped me understand what it would be like to live with autism and I would definitely recommend it.
Famous Five Collection 3 by Enid Blyton
The Famous Five collection (books 1-3) features the first three adventures of The Famous Five. In book 1, Five On A Treasure Island, we are first introduced to three siblings, Julian, Dick and Anne. They are sent by their parents to Kirrin to spend their summer holidays with their cousin Georgina, their Aunt Fanny, who is really nice and their irritable Uncle Quentin.
However, it is clear that the four will soon become the best of friends, especially when Georgina (who insists on being called George) eventually introduces them to her secret dog Timmy. She takes them to the island she owns in the Bay on which there is a ruined castle. The children get caught up in some truly breath-taking adventures in this first, fantastic Famous Five book! The other two books, Five Go Adventuring Again and Five Run Away Together are again set in Kirrin. They have all sorts of fun and thrilling moments and meet some interesting characters, including the tutor Mr. Roland and the horrible Stick family and there is some complicated detective work to be done. I loved this collection because the stories are very exciting and because there is lots of adventure and mystery and three stories in one book meant three times the enjoyment. I would absolutely recommend The Famous Five series to everyone.
Hamish and The Neverpeople by Danny Wallace & Jamie Littler
Hamish and the PDF have just saved Starkly. However, there’s another adventure just around the corner in London…….
When they discover a mysterious world almost identical to their own called the Otherearth they meet kids that are their doubles. They discover evil mastermind Axel Scarmarsh is zapping important people like the Prime Minister in order to take over the world! But will Hamish and his friends stop him and save the world again? I loved this book as it was full of bravery, friendship and adventure. Jamie Littler’s Illustrations are really cool and bring all the action and adventure alive!
The ending was fun and hinted to a third book, so I am hoping there will be another Hamish Adventure soon!
Timmy Failure We Meet Again by Stephan Pastis
This is the hilarious 4th book in the Timmy Failure series by Stephan Pastis with some cool illustrations. I nearly fell off my chair laughing. It’s my favourite book in the series so far!
Timmy is back with his business partner Total ( a polar bear who sleeps all day long), his best friend Rollo (who is determined to get good marks in the nature report) and his arch nemesis Corrina; Corrina who just happens to be his partner for the nature report (groan!).
But to add to his troubles is that his house is like a zoo: Total the polar bear, Molly Moskins cat, Senor Burrito, and Lucifer a sausage dog belonging to the basketball coach called Rick (aka Coach Drill-A-Kid) who Timmy’s mum is dating. Timmy is desperate to find the miracle report, who took it and who might be cheating, as he wants to prove that himself and his detective society will be triumphant yet again. But will it? I would recommend this book to anyone who is a Diary Of A Wimpy Kid fan.
Easter Rising 1916 – Molly’s Diary by Patricia Murphy
This is an amazing book about a young girl’s diary following the events of The Easter Rising 1916, It captures history beautifully and reflects on the loss of life and bravery of the men, women and children involved in the Easter Rising especially as this year is the 100th year anniversary.
12 year old Molly O ‘Donovan lives on Sackville Street opposite the GPO (General Post Office) where her father works as Chief Technical Officer in Dublin 1916.
It’s Easter and unknown to his parents Molly’s brother Jack has gone off ‘marching’ with Countess Markeviez’s Fianna Boy Scouts, but when Molly goes to find him at Liberty Hall she accidentally overhears that the Leaders are planning a rebellion ! Now she knows she must find Jack and bring him to safety. Running around Dublin looking for Jack, she also gets caught up in the Rising as she is a trained first-aider and witness’s history that we can only read about. I would highly recommend this book to people who love history and adventure.
Tom Gates 8 Tom Gates Yes No (Maybe…) by Liz Pichon
This is another hilarious Tom Gates book by Liz Pichon full of awesome illustrations and loads of laugh out loud moments for all the family to enjoy!
In this book the school fundraiser is coming up and Tom and his popcorn group are trying to do better than Marcus’s group with the comic folders. Also Mum is trying to set up a car booth sale but they accidentally sell her brooch that she loves. Can they find it for her birthday?

Rory Rooney loves the book “Don’t Be Scared Be Prepared”, but he’s not prepared for bully Tommy-Lee Komissky. He takes Rory’s sandwiches so he can have them himself and even throws him off the school bus! One day Tommy takes Rory’s chocolate Frisbee but has a nut allergy and is immediately taken to hospital. A few days later, Rory turns green and is taken to a secure hospital by helicopter where he is put in an isolation ward. Who to his horror should he meet there but Tommy-Lee who is also green! There’s a wonderful message in this book , that we all are super and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a fast-moving, entertaining and funny adventure!
Diary of a Wimpy Kid Book 9: The Long Haul by Jeff Kinney
The 9th book in the hilarious Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney, follows the journey of the Heffley family on their road trip across America. Their expectations are high but never has a road trip gone so wrong! The first night they stayed in a horrible motel and had sugar wafers and breath mints for dinner, after Roderick locked the frozen pizza in the room safe thinking it was a microwave. The rest of the holiday brought problems with a bearded man and his family, lost keys, flat tires, biting pigs and crazy seagulls. It seemed this road trip would never end and soon they realize there’s no place like home.
I loved this book and I couldn’t put it down. The illustrations on each page were amazing and brought the story alive. I would definitely love to read the rest of the series and I recommend it to anyone who wants a good laugh.
Mermaid’s Sister by Holly Webb
This book is the astounding sequel to The Water Horse by Holly Webb, a book I thoroughly enjoyed.
It is a magical story of a young girl called Mia whose cousin Olivia is the ruler of Venice . One day she meets a mermaid called Ara and they become great friends. But Mia, Ara and Lorin [Mia’s magical water horse] are in danger as the Talish invaders are trying to invade Venice! They must use their combined strength to defeat the Talish Invaders and save their beautiful home. I would recommend this book to all girls who love magic and adventure, as I found it was an exciting read and left me hungry for more!
Dork Diaries Drama Queen by Rachel Renee Russell
The hilarious 9th book in the New York Times bestselling series, Dork Diaries!

Grandpa’s Great Escape by David Walliams
Another great , enthralling, exciting, moving and hilarious read from the hugely popular David Walliams ! It tells the amazing story about the bond between a young boy called Jack and his beloved Grandpa. Even though his Grandpa had dementia [he thinks he’s a pilot in WW2 again] and was put in Twilight Towers Jack never gave up on him. Nothing will get in the way of Jack and his Grandpa if they work together as a team to get out of sinister Twilight Towers, and take off in a WW2 Spitfire . Up, up and away!
It’s my favourite David Walliams book so far! I would strongly recommend this book to children and adults alike!
