The Spelling Bee Team headed out West for the first time this year and we were excited to see who would be crowned the county champions of Roscommon, Leitrim & Sligo. For an update on each of this past week’s competitions please read below.
Roscommon
The Abbey Hotel in Roscommon was the venue for the county’s 2017 final. We had a great turnout of 23 magnificent spellers who were all eager to claim this year’s Roscommon county crown.
After some amazing spelling it was Grace Holmes from St. Mary’s Primary School in Strokestown who beat out the competition to be named our Roscommon champion. Grace will now go on to represent her county in the Connacht final in May.
Leitrim
The Spelling Bee Team travelled to the Landmark Hotel in Carrick – On – Shannon to crown this year’s Leitrim Spelling Bee champion. We were delighted to welcome 7 magnificent spellers to the Landmark, who were accompanied by their magnificent fans.
The audience were treated to some excellent spelling and were all in awe when Eileen Maguire from St. Brigid’s NS, Drumcong rose to the top of the pile to be crowned this year’s Leitrim champion. Eileen will now go on to represent Leitrim in the Connacht final.
Sligo
The Spelling Bee Team received a very warm welcome to Rathcormac NS, the host school for our Sligo County final. The staff and pupils were extremely helpful and really made all 18 spellers feel at home. When the action began the fans were treated to a master-class in spelling, we really did witness some magnificent efforts.
In the end it was Fionn Mac Giolla Mairtin from Gaelscoil Chnoc na Re who came out on top to claim the title of Sligo county champion 2017. Fionn will now go on to represent his county in the Connacht final.
