2020 Tesla Roadster : Concept Cars

Tesla Motors has quietly revealed that its long-awaited second-generation Roadster will be introduced in 2019.

What the upcoming Roadster — assuming that’s what it’s called — will be powered by is up in the air, but Tesla has hinted that it will be even quicker than the top-of-the-line Model S that was announced just a few days ago.

“There is of course one speed faster than ludicrous, but that is reserved for the next-generation Roadster in four years: maximum plaid,” explained the automaker in a press release.

In Ludicrous Mode, the Model S can reach 60 mph from a stop in just 2.8 seconds, a figure that makes it the fastest regular-production four-door sedan on the planet. If Tesla keeps its ambitious promise, the next Roadster will be able to sprint from zero to 60 mph faster than the 903-horsepower McLaren P1.

Driving range will be another of the convertible’s strong points. The 3.0 update that was introduced last December increased the original Roadster’s range to 400 miles in the right conditions, and the upcoming model is widely expected to beat that figure.

Although the original Roadster was built on a platform borrowed from Lotus, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has all but confirmed its successor will be designed and built entirely in-house. Some sources claim that it will borrow quite a few bits and pieces from the upcoming Model 3 but the California-based car maker has opted not to comment on the matter.

What’s all but certain is that the convertible will not use any components stamped with a Lotus part number.

“[When we designed the Roadster] we ended up changing most of the damn car so we thought later, why did we do that?” revealed the executive in an earlier interview.

Tesla will likely provide additional insight into what we can expect from its upcoming Roadster over the next few months. Until then, the company is busily working on bringing the Model X to the market and putting the final touches on the 3 Series-sized Model 3.
