First up is our interview with Conor Dailey, owner of EatSeed, a family-owned small business located in North Carolina, whose mission is “to provide delicious and unique vegan, gluten-free, organic super seed products using the highest quality ingredients to help our customers live a healthier life”.

What motivated you to start Eat Seed?
It was my 30th birthday and I was out of shape. I made a pact with myself that I was going to start eating healthy and start working out. As I started to eat healthy and educate myself I started reading a lot about these seeds. I would go to the health food store and buy multiple seeds for my cooking. I thought to myself, “I wish you could just buy a mix of these seeds online”, and boom EatSeed was born! On a side note, I have lost over 60lbs and have run 3 marathons since that day!
What parts of running a small business do you find most challenging? Most rewarding?
Finding customers. Growth. We are a very small business; my wife and I do it all. This gives us no time to expand, advertise and use social media like we would like. The most rewarding thing would easily be the happy reviews we get of customers telling us what they are using the seeds for and how fresh they are!

How has technology (the Internet, Social Media, etc.) impacted how you conduct business?
We are only an online store so the Internet is everything. DreamHost has us covered for hosting, WordPress, WooCommerce, email addresses, security certificates, domain registration and more. Makes it easy having everything in one place. With automated payments I really don’t have to worry about a thing. The only time I hear from DreamHost is getting those crazy monthly news letters.

Why did you choose to host eatseed.com with DreamHost? How has DreamHost helped you run your small business?
To be honest we didn’t choose DreamHost first. We went the cheap route and learned our lesson! The site was constantly going down, the customer service was non-existent and user friendly was not in their vocabulary. You ever hear the phrase, “You get what you pay for”? DreamHost has been a huge benefit in the fact I don’t have to think about it. No offense. We don’t have to worry about the site and everything was easy to set up so we could and can spend more time focusing on running the business.

What does the future have in store for Eat Seed?
We will be adding new products and even thought about branching out to nuts, grains, rice, etc.
Do you have any advice for those interested in starting their own small business?
Be realistic in your goals. Unless you have invented something better than sliced bread it could take time. Have fun!
