Lately we’ve been receiving a lot of questions regarding where we source our ingredients. We thought it was time to share this with you! At Chef’s Plate we pride ourselves on sourcing seasonal ingredients from local farms, importers and family-run purveyors. We work with the best suppliers to provide the freshest and most ethically and locally sourced ingredients where possible. Since we introduce six new menu items each week, we have the opportunity to work with a long list of local suppliers- much too long to squeeze into a single blog post!
We’ll be writing a series of ‘Meet Our Supplier’ posts for you to check out. This week we’re featuring our seafood supplier- read on to see how they’re setting a precedent for sustainable seafood in Canada!
Sustainable Seafood
We always receive the most questions regarding our seafood! We source our seafood from a local Toronto business established in 1987. They are a fully Canadian and family owned company – in fact the original owners are still active in the business! This local business offers a wide variety of seafood – from local, to sustainable to organic seafood – that stays fresh so it can make it onto your dinner table!
Our seafood supplier prides themselves on working directly with the source in order to control the quality and freshness of their products. They only work with the most reputable suppliers in the industry that have the highest standards and certificates for food safety. Recently, our seafood supplier has pushed for their sources to supply sustainable and eco-friendly seafood whenever possible.
What exactly is sustainable seafood? Well, sustainable seafood is any seafood that is either caught or farmed in ways that consider the long-term vitality of harvested species and the well-being of the oceans. Our local Toronto business prides itself on being a leader in sustainable seafood. They work with a large number of vendors and private organizations in order to develop more sustainable practices for the seafood industry. Hooray for seafood that is good for our bodies AND good for the environment!
