Tamworth is a New South Wales city that is located inland on the western side of the Great Dividing Range in the New England region. It is situated on the Peel River and is the major regional centre for the region. It is known for equine events and country music. Tamworth began to develop in the 1830’s and was gazetted in 1850. It is known as the “First City of Light” because it was the first place in Australia to have electric street lighting that was powered by a municipally owned power station in 1888.

Tourism is also a pretty significant industry for Tamworth with most of the tourist dollars coming in during the annual Tamworth Country Music Festival, the biggest country music festival in all of the Southern Hemisphere. The Golden Guitar Country Music Awards are also held here. While in the region, tourists also visit Tamworth’s museums and galleries, or the Marsupial Park. In addition, locals and visitors alike enjoy visiting the picturesque and quaint nearby towns of Barraba, Nundle, and Quirindi.

Tamworth is known as the sporting horse capital of Australia and the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre was built here in 2008. It is the headquarters for three major equine associations CHA, ABCRA, and AQHA. Various competitions and events are held at the centre. Tamworth’s climate is on the warmer side with hot summers and mild winters. Average high temperatures in summer range between 28 °C and 33 °C. Average lows during winter time range from 3 °C to 5 °C. The average precipitation is 632.7 mm per year with an average of 83 rainy days a year. The rainy season runs through the spring and summer with the possibility of storms that cause flooding especially in January. Tamworth usually does not see snow in the winter, but some of the surrounding villages like Nundle and Frosts can see snow.
