Mildura is the largest urban centre with its central business district close to the banks of the Murray River. The main industry for the city is largely horticultural. Its products include grapes, citrus, almonds, and dried fruit. Mildura is responsible for supplying 80% of the grapes for the entire state of Victoria. There is a large tourism industry in Mildura; however 30% of all tourism is due to domestic tourism. Since Mildura is situated on the Murray River, it plays a large part in the industry, transportation, and tourism for the local economy. Mildura’s culture has been fueled by artists and creative residents who have helped grow and nurture a community of artists and musicians. Mildura hosts annual festivals and events like the Mildura Country Music Festival, the International Balloon Fiesta, the Jazz Food & Wine Festival, Mildura Wentworth Arts Festival, the Murray River International Music Festival, Mildura Writers Festival, Mildura Palimpsest, and the Mildura Show. Wentworth is a small town in New South Wales, but it lies at the confluence of the two most important rivers in Australia, the Darling River and the Murray River. The Murray River lines the border between New South Wales and Victoria. The town is named after the famous explorer and politician William Charles Wentworth. The industry is similar to that of Mildura, but Wentworth is also an important tourist destination and considered the gateway to the outback.

Wentworth was founded in the 1850’s. It is known as the gateway to the outback but also has its place as a bustling inland river port. There is a rich history of river boats dating back to colonial times.In fact, it is the busiest inland river port in New South Wales and has held that title since the 1870’s. Many colonial era buildings are still standing and are a reminder of the town’s connection with the past. The Old Gaol and the Customs House are among these old buildings still representing the days of old in Wentworth. The Wentworth Pioneer Museum houses over 3,000 exhibits and includes fossilised remains of animals from Australia’s ancient history from more than 20,000 years ago. Wentworth is also a base of operations for many tours into Mungo National Park. Other places of interest in and around Wentworth include Old Wentworth Wharf, Wentworth and District Sporting Club, Lock 10 and Weir, St Ignatius Convent School, Junction Park, Sturt’s Tree Wentworth Caravan Park, Thegoa Lagoon, Perry Sand-Dunes, St John’s Anglican Church, Fotherby Park, Court House, Pioneer World, Lake Nearie Nature Reserve, and Scotia Sanctuary.

Even though Wentworth is considered a sister city to Mildura and is only 34 km away, it has a slightly different climate but the temperatures are very similar. The climate is a Mediterranean climate. Wentworth has hot summers and mild winters. The average high temperature in summer is between 31°C and 33°C. In the winter months, the average low temps dip to 5°C and 6°C. The average precipitation for the year is 286 mm with an average of 59 rainy days.
