Wollongong is quite an interesting city to learn about and a very appealing place to live. It is close enough to Sydney (82 km south of the capital) to visit the major metropolitan hub, but also far enough away from all the hustling and bustling to be laid back and relaxed in atmosphere. Wollongong is in the Illawarra region of New South Wales right on the Pacific Coast. It is the 3rd largest city in New South Wales and the 10th largest city in Australia. It lies in a narrow coastal strip between the Pacific Ocean and the Illawarra Escarpment. This makes for quite a beautiful and dramatic city skyline nestled between the deep blue ocean and lush green mountains.

Wollongong metropolitan city limits run between Helensburgh to the north and Windang to the south. The Wollongong Statistical District governs authority of Wollongong, Shellharbour, and Kiama. The entire district has a population over 300,000. Wollongong is a port city and is the harbour is home to two historical lighthouses. Much of its industry comes from being a port city, tourism, and coal mining. It is a great place to live and a great place to visit. The stretch of beaches along Wollongong is known for surfing. The Illawarra Escarpment is covered in rainforest. The University of Wollongong is known throughout Australia and has about 22,000 students in attendance. The city is also home to the Nan Tien Temple, the largest Buddhist Temple in the southern hemisphere.

According to an Instagram study, Buzzfeed says that Wollongong is the happiest city in Australia because people here smile more than anywhere else in the country. It cites the close proximity of so much diversity as what makes residents here so happy. There are few places in the world where you can be just minutes away from the city centre, the harbour, surf beaches, lakes, mountains, rainforest, waterfalls, and the countryside too.

Wollongong’s climate is an oceanic climate. The average high temperatures in summer reach 76° C to 78°C. The average low temperatures in winter are 46°C to 49°C. Rainfall I spread out throughout the year with thunderstorms in the summer with heavy rain, lightening, and hair occasionally. July and August are the windy months with westerly gusts over 100 km/hr. The average humidity is 61 per cent.
