From 17th October to 23rd October, we celebrate the great and the good of British Bakes with National Baking Week.
As a nation, we Brits love our cake. Perfect for a celebration or just as a sweet treat to accompany a cup of tea or coffee, cakes are definitely a part of what makes Britain so great. And if there was ever a clue to our obsession with baked goodies, we even have a beloved TV show dedicated to baking. You might have heard of it, the Great British Bake Off?
Our Top British Bakes
So in honour of National Baking Week, we’ve rounded up some of our top British Bakes. From a classic Victoria Sponge to delightfully sticky toffee pudding, pretty butterfly cakes to shortbread, we’ve got plenty of choice to help satisfy your sweet tooth. We guarantee you’ll be drooling by the time you reach the end!
Victoria Sponge
The Queen of all cakes, nothing beats a traditional Victoria Sponge as a tea-time treat. Although there are many different variations (butter cream filling, just jam or whipped cream too?), we’re big fans of Mary Berry’s recipe.
Lemon Drizzle
Although delicious with a cup of tea, we actually quite enjoy a slice of this lemony cake with a dollop of ice cream for dessert. However you choose to enjoy it, it’s incredibly moreish so won’t be around for long.
Battenberg Cake

Oh Battenberg! Although gaudy to some, we do adore your colourful check pattern and marzipan coating. A peculiarly British confection, no top British bakes list would be complete without it.
Carrot Cake
To borrow a phrase from one of our beloved cake bakers, carrot cake is an ‘exceedingly good cake’. Enticingly light with a cream cheese topping, it’s definitely a healthy cake to enjoy as it’s made with carrots, right?!
Sticky Toffee Pudding

So delectable and devilishly sticky, this pudding will have you licking the plate clean. A springy sponge with a treacle toffee sauce, we think this British bake is one of our finest creations!
Bakewell Tart

A sure-fire hit with tea lovers, Bakewell Tart is a classic almond tart with a hidden layer of jam. Tried and tested for generations, this modest tart can definitely stir up controversy over how it’s made. Pudding or tart? Puff or shortcrust pastry? Type of jam? How do you make your Bakewell tart?
Scones
The easiest teatime treat, no afternoon tea cake stand would be complete without scones. We tested out different recipes to find you the best scone to try; now the only question is whether it’s cream or jam first?
Shortbread
A beautiful baked good, the humble shortbread is always a crowd pleaser, especially around Christmas time. The simplicity of these buttery biscuits means you can enjoy them as a snack or as a dessert. We like serving ours with a dollop of whipped cream and fresh fruit.
Coffee and Walnut Cake
This traditional cake never fails to please; its bitter-sweet flavours make it one of our all-time favourites. Definitely one to enjoy as an afternoon pick-me-up!
Butterfly Cakes
Embrace your inner child with one of these adorable and mouth-watering butterfly cakes. Oh so simple to make, all you need to do is make a batch of plain fairy cakes, cut out the top and fill with butter cream icing and then add the wings. Expect these to fly off the plate!
