Being from the US, we hear and see a lot of the beauty that is Australia. We haven’t had the opportunity visit Oz yet, but it is high on our list. From the beautiful beaches to the bustling cities, we plan on spending quite a bit of time exploring the beautiful country.
Here are our top 5 places we plan on visiting in Australia:
1. Sydney
We’d love to see the iconic Opera House in person. I still remember watching the 2000 Summer Olympics and the images of the Sydney Harbour and the Opera House have stuck with me to this very day. This would include a walking tour of Circular Quay to soak in the beautiful harbour as well as the Sydney Harbour Bridge. After some sightseeing, boarding a ferry to Manly would be a great way to get out on the water for a different perspective of the city.
2. Melbourne
Another city we long to visit is Melbourne. We love to bike, even if it’s at a leisurely pace, and we’ve heard Melbourne is a haven for cyclists. Along the way, we’d definitely check out the cute cafes and the thriving arts and science scene, like the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Art Play and Federation Square.
3. Outback
I am also very interested in touring the Australian Outback. Whether that be seeing the massive monolith in Uluru or seeing the land while on board the Indian-Pacific from Sydney to Perth. We also look forward to seeing the hundreds of different species of animals that call Australia home. Whether that be the iconic kangaroo or hearing the human-like laugh of the Kookaburra. We have explored many U.S. National Parks and love the feel of nature in it’s purest form and I’d love to see the Outback through those same eyes.
4. Gold Coast
Along with loving National Parks, we are also big fans of great beaches and oceanic coasts. We’ve heard the Gold Coast is the place for beautiful sand and excellent surf. Activities such as surfing and boogie boarding all the way to humpback whale watching are right up our alley and all can be done from this magical place. We would love to enjoy the outdoors along the Gold Coast by taking in some of the fantastic markets or playing at some of their amazing playgrounds.
5. Great Barrier Reef
We’ve recently spent quite a bit of time in the Florida Keys, which included snorkeling the Florida Reef, so we’ve really come to love being in the water and seeing the vibrant colors of the living coral. The Great Barrier Reef would be a step up from that. Snorkeling or diving would be a spectacular experience when visiting Australia.
As a rather naive American when it comes to great destinations in Australia, that’s my list. Let me know in the comments below of other must-sees in Australia!
