Natalie Baszile’s debut novel, Queen Sugar, is “smart and heart-felt and highly recommended,” according to Karen Joy Fowler, award-winning author of We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves. An early version of the novel won the Hurston Wright College Writer’s Award. Baszile earned her MFA from Warren Wilson College.

RELATIONSHIP ENNEAGRAM SERIES WITH SANDRA SMITH: TYPES 6 & 9 PANEL The fabulous Sandra Smith returns with more Enneagram wisdom for us.
For many of us, why relationships work or don’t work remains a mystery. We find ourselves repeating patterns that limit our potential. In this series, the Enneagram will be used to explore each type’s focus of attention, world view and false-core driver and how these impact relationship. Ways we over-protect our hearts and the gifts we bring to others and the world will be discussed. The series will continue on the first Tuesday of each month.

A longtime journalist and the author of Callings, local author Gregg Levoy has a new book, Vital Signs: The Nature and Nurture of Passion.
Dennis Merritt (The Art of Uncertainty) calls Vital Signs “a roadmap to living a life using your passions as a compass.” Levoy has conducted seminars and lectured at many national and international organizations including the Esalen Institute, the Omega Institute, the American Counseling Association, and The Smithsonian Institution.

JAMIE MASON IN CONVERSATION WITH JOE D’AGNESE Local mystery writer extraordinaire Jamie Mason discusses her second novel, Monday’s Lie, with another extraordinary local author, Joe D’Agnese! Mason is also the author of Three Graves Full, which the New York Times called “ripping good” and Tana French (In the Woods) called “an offbeat, high-class, pacey mystery that blends black humor with dark lyricism, and deft, intricate plotting with dead-on psychological insight.” Joe D’Agnese is the co-author of Signing Their Rights Away, Signing Their Lives Away, and Stuff Every American Should Know. He is also the author of the children’s book Blockhead: The Life of Fibonacci.

In West of Sunset, Stewart O’Nan picks up the life of F. Scott Fitzgerald near its end, when he went to work as a screenwriter in Hollywood. In its fictionalized story, West of Sunset includes other real characters including Ernest Hemingway, Humphrey Bogart, and Dorothy Parker. George Saunders (The 10th of December) says, “O’Nan is an incredibly versatile and charming writer….One brilliant American writer meditating on another—what’s not to love?” O’Nan is also the author of several works of fiction and nonfiction including The Odds, Last Night at the Lobster, Emily, Alone, Faithful (with Stephen King), and The Circus Fire.

The author of the famous book on punctuation, Eats, Shoots & Leaves, Lynne Truss gives us a sensational new mystery, Cat Out of Hell. Truss herself says, “It concerns the mystery of a missing woman, a talking cat called Roger, a remote seaside cottage, and a nice retired librarian with a dog called Watson.” The Times calls Cat Out of Hell, “Not unlike Sherlock Holmes solving The Master and Margarita with the help of Jeeves.” Truss has written several books on punctuation, Tennyson, cats, and one book on her obsession with sport called Get Her Off the Pitch. She lives in England.

Andrea Olson is back with a new salon! This series will use the book Meeting the Shadow: The Hidden Power of the Dark Side of Human Nature as a guide for exploring the personal and collective shadow, shadow work, and how to navigate the shadow instead of letting it run rampant. The third session will focus on the Shadow Making Part 2.

The Story of the Philadelphia Eleven tells the story of the first eleven women priests in the Episcopal Church and how their ordinations set off a media firestorm, upended centuries of customs defining the role of women within the church, and raised questions about the very nature of God. According to Mary E. Hunt of the Women’s Alliance for Theology, Ethics, and Ritual, The Story of the Philadelphia Eleven is “a needed history and a brilliantly told tale.” Darlene will be joined by two of the priests, Heyward Carter and Alison Cheek.

A staff favorite, Jonathan Odell will discuss his latest book, Miss Hazel and the Rosa Parks League. A chronicle of family and place, Evan Williams shares the stories of four generations of apple farmers in Henderson County.
