A few years back I shot Lorraine Kirke’s New York pad for my book Decorating with Style (with photographer extraordinaire Graham Atkins-Hughes). The house is situated in Greenwich Village in NYC, and it’s stayed in my mind ever since.
Lorraine’s style is kaleidoscopic in a really cool way. She marries vintage finds with eBay finds, reworks, recycles and puts together an effortlessly laid back vibe that is so homely. Everything tells a narrative in Lorraine’s home and everything has a patina – from the lamps in the kitchen to the tin tiled ceilings. She doesn’t follow trends or rules she does what she likes and I’m the hugest fan of that. There’s texture, interest and personal details everywhere, with books and art tucked into every unexpected corner. It’s a personal curated collection of pieces that have been collected over time and are loved – you get that feeling the second you walk through the door.
Lorraine also used to run the coolest vintage fashion store called Geminola, right round the corner from her house. I remember thinking if I could choose anywhere to live in NYC this area would be it – quintessentially New York with big brownstone houses and huge trees, (SJP lives just down the street!) the Spotted Pig restaurant not far away, little boutiques and coffee houses – I love it.
Lorraine has since moved but she’s recently penned an interiors tome entitled Would You Like to See the House?: Unapologetic Interiors. Can’t wait to see how she’s decorated her next place!
