There have been some mixed feeling when it comes to Passengers which has been seen from some of the reviews that have been going around.
So the other night I popped on over to Cineworld in Llandudno to check out the new Sci-Fi movie starring Jennifer Lawrence as Aurora Lane and Chris Pratt as Jim Preston, so I could see for myself how the film would pan out.
Passengers tells the story of a spacecraft travelling to a distant colony planet, Homestead II, which is transporting thousands of people in a hope of starting a new life on a planet that isn’t over populated, but on route one of the sleep chambers has a malfunction, so one of the passengers, played by Chris Pratt, is woken up 90 years too soon.
He endeavours to find out why he has been woken up, his only companion is an android bartender played by Michael Sheen. Loneliness gets a little too much before he discovers Jennifer Lawrence’s sleep chamber and makes the hard decision to wake her up!
Passengers – A Romantic SciFi
The trailers for the movie are a little misleading, they give you the idea that both Pratt and Lawrence wake up at the same time, but the first 30 mins (or thereabouts) of Passengers is just Pratt on the massive ship hurtling through space. The 30 minutes is his first year on his own before making the tough decision that he has to make.
Passengers is a strange film, at first I thought it was going to be a film that would contain a little more action that what it does have, but it becomes a film that looks into the soul of loneliness and the need for a companion to spend the rest of your life with.
It kind of reminded of a sort of Robinson Crusoe story of one man stranded, but now on a ship instead of an island. When he is joined by Jennifer Lawrence, I thought, yeah this could be Titanic in space, love interest between different class passengers on a doomed ship!
Passengers – Cargo Bay
The chemistry of Pratt and Lawrence works very well, from the first meeting and their romance to the first bust up. The film is also visually stunning, the interior of the ship is nicely done, it kind of reminds me of the space station in 2001, remember the scene where they walk in the curved station in 2001, well that’s how part of the ship is in Passengers. The external shots and effects in the movie are also a delight to see, with some amazing CGI and set work to bring space to the big screen in 3D.
I have to say that I really enjoyed the movie, OK it’s not an action-packed Sci-Fi movie, but it is a movie that I could watch again, it does have an edge of the seat moment in the last part of the film that has the 3D working really well. Look out for Lawrence Fishburne and Andy Garcia, short parts in the movie but a nice touch.
