To celebrate the release of This is where I leave you on October 24th, we’re going to introduce you to each of the Altman’s.
When their father passes away, four grown siblings, bruised and banged up by their respective adult lives, are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof together for a week, along with their over-sharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes and might-have-beens. Confronting their history and the frayed states of their relationships among the people who know and love them best, they ultimately reconnect in hysterical and emotionally affecting ways amid the chaos, humour, heartache and redemption that only families can provide—driving us insane even as they remind us of our truest, and often best, selves.
Judd (Jason Bateman)- The ‘Uncomplicated one’
Judd is a down-to-earth guy who is extremely content with his life and doesn’t do complicated, that is before it all goes sideways of course! His marriage falls apart, there’s a death in the family—and it knocks him off balance. He isn’t use to disruption and it’s time for him to re-evaluate the direction his life is heading.
Hilary (Jane Fonda)– The ‘over sharing mother’
Parents can be prone to sharing extremely embarrassing information with their children; and matriarch of the house, Hilary, is no exception. She may be unconventional but there’s no doubting she thinks the world of her kids. She’s a larger than life character in more ways than one with her new plastic surgery she’s very proud to show off.
Paul (Corey Stoll) – The ‘big brother’
Paul is your stereotypical ‘scary’ big brother, the one that’s supposedly ‘never been fun’. Being the eldest sibling, he feels a need to be responsible whilst also taking on the family business. Paul has the thankless task of being the good son while their siblings go off to follow their own dreams.
Phillip (Adam Driver) – The ‘baby’ of the family
There’s no doubt that Philip has buckets of charm and certainly has a way with the ladies. Nevertheless, the youngest Altman brother has always been a little short on maturity, sliding in and out of trouble so rapidly that his siblings have given up keeping track of him He also has a remarkable talent for pushing everyone’s buttons. Intentionally. He just enjoys the fireworks.
Wendy (Tina Fey) – The ‘supportive sister’
Wendy is the wise, warm, big sister with the awesome left hook. Protective of her brothers to the end, she’s always there to offer advice but there’s no doubt her life is tinged with sadness despite her successful husband and two children.
