State of the Union is back, with a major twist.

I would like to welcome you to the new era of the State of the Union. As in the past, it will still be the same Big Ten recruiting roundup we all know and love, but with a few new twists. If you've ever ventured onto one of the recruiting sites that we use as our basis for creating these charts, you've surely noticed that the rankings are more specific than just stars. In fact, 247, ESPN, and Rivals all grade on their own numerical systems. While stars make it easy for the casual follower to get the information they need to know, they can sometimes be misleading. For example, a four star player on 247Sports can range from an 89 to a 97. It is for this reason, that I have decided to give these ratings a facelift. From now on, this post will look at the actual numbers for the players, instead of stars (aside from Scout, they only do stars). So take a look, and enjoy the first look at our new Big Ten big board.

**As a quick point of reference, the BSD grade was created by normalizing all of the other rankings to the 247 mean and standard deviation. Therefore, it is technically possible for someone to grade out over 100, since 247's scale actually goes to 110. However, because 247 very infrequently ranks someone over 100, and ESPN infrequently ranks someone over 90 (they go to 100), it's unlikely to find someone over 100 in my rankings, unless they are one of the top seven, or so, recruits in the country. For example. Josh Sweat (Rivals- 6.1, 247- 99, Scout- 5, ESPN- 93) would grade out as a 101.21 on my scale. Hope that helps.**

You're probably confused. "Nick, what in the world is the BSD Rank?" Well, dear reader, let me explain.

When I realized that we could look at these rankings more specifically, I also realized that we could create a new way to look at them altogether. (FULL DISCLOSURE: I don't know how 247Sports computes their Composite rankings. They might do something similar to what I'm about to explain, but I have no way of knowing. Regardless, I assure you that the results are different, and you'll see why.) On the surface, there's no way to combine the Rivals grade (scale of 4.9-6.1), the 247 grade (scale of 79 and below-101), and the ESPN grade (scale of 50-100). Therefore, with the help of some good friends (thank you Kevin Furlong and Kevin Clancy), we developed a way to give each player a new BSD Grade. This grade is based off of the 247Sports, ESPN, and Rivals grades (Scout was excluded due to a lack of a more exact system of rankings), valuing 247Sports and Rivals the most. I could go on for a long time explaining exactly how this grade is made, but I know not everyone wants that explanation. So if you're interested, shoot me an email (nick.polak.51@gmail.com), and I'd be happy to lay it all out for you. For now though, let's just look at the results.

Notes: Ohio State's class, while actually grading out lower than Penn State's on 247, Rivals, and Scout in terms of the average recruit rating, is full of star power. Torrence Gibson, Justin Hilliard, Jashon Cornell, Matt Burrell, and Jerome Baker lead the way for this class, but there are plenty of intriguing guys ranked slightly lower, as well. Eric Glover-Williams is primed to be a stud in the secondary, Joe Burrow just had an extraordinary senior season, and Keven Feder might actually be half-giant. It's an extremely impressive class for the Buckeyes, and they even got a long snapper!

Notes: Around the middle of November, Nittany Lion fans thought the sky was falling. Since then, Franklin and the staff have picked up commitments from Garrett Taylor, who becomes the highest rated recruit in the class, and Paris Palmer, the number one Junior College offensive tackle. However, the strength of Penn State's class lies in the consistency of their rankings. They might not have anyone ranked at the same A+ level that many of Ohio State's recruits sit at, but the Penn State class is full of guys around the A/A- minus level, which is exactly what they needed to help rebuild a depleted roster.

Visit our Penn State recruiting page for more information on the Nittany Lion recruits.

Notes: Michigan State has an interesting class here. Not only did they pluck a stud running back right out of Ohio, but they have a nice southern presence. Although the kids they pulled out of Texas aren't the highest ranked kids in the state, it's still important to maintain those relationships with coaches that can generate highly ranked kids at a greater rate than coaches in the north can. The aforementioned Larry Scott should be able to step in and help continue the recent string of running back success for Sparty.

Notes: Nebraska is a school that could still make a late splash, as teams with new head coaches often do. Still though, Pelini's comments along with current player reactions could not have left the best impression on their targeted recruits. The Huskers have a nice class for now, and Eric Lee is a name to remember, but there is probably a lot of movement still ahead for Mike Riley and his staff.

Visit Corn Nation for more on the Huskers.

Notes: The best part of Wisconsin's pickup of Paul Chryst as their head coach, is the familiarity factor. Recruits know that Wisconsin is about running the football, and playing defense. Nothing illustrates that more than Jordan Stevenson's commitment, which happened while the Badgers were without a coach. Despite that fact, Stevenson and everyone else in America knows that the Badgers will always run the football. Chryst should be able to get Wisconsin into the discussion a bit more for Pennsylvania recruits in the years to come, but that's not something we'll necessarily see this year. One thing to love about this class though? Thirteen recruits from the combination of Florida, Texas, and California.

Visit Bucky's 5th Quarter for more on the Badgers.

Notes: Northwestern can't help but be overjoyed with this class so far. Coach Fitzgerald has done a fantastic job over the years with this program, but it will take a few years of sustained, very high level success to turn the Wildcats into a major player in Big Ten recruiting. That being said, he's doing a great job with his 2015 class, including two names that might sound familiar to Penn State fans. Charlie Fessler (Erie, PA), is someone who took a Penn State visit in the summer and had a little bit of interest from the staff. Cameron Green is someone who told me he had some Penn State interest a while back, but that interest never amounted to much. Both players have the potential to cause some trouble for defenses, and Charlie Fessler already has that feel of someone who will seem like they've been playing in college for the last 65 years.

Visit Inside NU for more on the Wildcats.

Notes: The recruiting world was #TalkinBoutTheHoosiers on December 14th, as they not only grabbed four new commits, but they flipped two of them. Mike Majette chose to flip from Maryland to Indiana, and Tyler Green decided to drop his Buckeye colors for Hoosier colors (which are almost the same, so that's pretty easy). When Tommy Stevens flipped to Penn State, things weren't looking great for the Hoosiers class, but they've rebounded nicely. They could use an influx of defensive players though, so look for the staff to push for that side of the ball as Signing Day approaches.

Visit Crimson Quarry for more on the Hoosiers.

Notes: Iowa's 2015 class should prove to be a very solid one, when all things are said and done. It comes as no surprise that the Hawkeyes were able to bring in a good group of linemen, including the younger brother of Reilly Reiff, as well as the Paulsen twins. Karan Higdon is the other big name to watch on the offensive side of the ball. Expect the Hawkeyes staff to recruit the defensive side of the ball hard in the closing month before National Signing Day. Props to the staff for doing a nice job of locking down the in-state talent, grabbing six of the state's top ten players.

Notes: Maryland's 2015 class is an interesting one. The commitment of Adam McLean was huge for them for many reasons, one of them being his ability to recruit. However, McLean's recruiting prowess has only really shown up for the 2016 class thus far, with the commitment of four star linebacker Keandre Jones. Of course, there's still time for plenty to change before National Signing Day, and it will. Personally, I'll be listening for news about McLean recruiting while at the Under Armour All-America game (he won't be participating, due to his injury). The Terps have some high-upside players to go along with McLean, in guys like DJ Moore, EJ Donahue, and Ty Johnson. Donahue in particular is someone who has a bright future ahead of him at UMD, and could be a starter on the offensive line for a long time.

Notes: This class is going to get very interesting, very quickly with the arrival of Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. It's a little too early to tell exactly which recruits they'll be targeting, but the comments coming from recruits at this week's all star games have been positive so far. There's no doubt that the class will start to fill up rapidly before NSD, but Michigan fans looking for a bevy of five stars to commit for 2015 will likely be disappointed. 2016 will be a different story, but for now, Harbaugh and his new staff need to get to work just filling out the rest of the class. They do have some great pieces already in place though, with Grant Newsome, Brian Cole, and Alex Malzone. And a kicker! #B1G

Notes: The Gophers haven't quite translated their on-field success to the recruiting world, just yet. After another season or two of challenging for the Big Ten West crown, they should start to be able to get into the conversation with more big time recruits. They're making do with what they have for now. Demry Croft is very athletic, and was one of the QB's Penn State reached out to following the departure of Brandon Wimbush. Quin Oseland and recent pick up, Tyler Moore, should both find themselves in the starting five on the line consistently in their careers.

Notes: The 2015 Illinois class, is the one that I think is most likely to outperform their rank. Not only do they have stud lineman Gabe Megginson, but they have a strong group of above average prospects, with Adam Solomon, AD Miller, Sam Mays, and Dre Brown. Those four plus Megginson could very well be the core of the Illini offense for years to come, and should provide Beckman with some decent weapons to work with.

Visit The Champaign Room for more on the Fighting Illini.
