Hello!

This is my very first long post that I want to share here. It took me 2 days to write this post. I want to share my knowledge about something that I know. So this is for beginners/newbies. Thought it could help some one. Please forgive me if I did something wrong

Okay let's go

Keyword research is the first and most important step when you're in Internet Marketing business. When you create an adsense website, an affiliate website or PPC campaign, you need to determine which keywords you're going to targeted first. You might ask your self "Which keywords should I choose?" or "How to find good keywords to target?". Well, there is a free but powerful tool to help you out. It's a product from giant search engine Google called Google Keyword Planner. So today I'm here to show you exactly, step by step on how to use GKP in proper way.

Requirement

an internet connection

a gmail account

a brain

and a cup of coffee

Okay here we go

First go ahead to Google Keyword Planner - the most reliable keyword research tool and It's FREE

Some of you may be forced to create an Google Adwords campaign before entering Keyword Planner tools, some not. This is annoying because you don't want to reveal your card information for just doing keyword research. But don't worry, please follow these steps below to bypass this weird thing.

1. Try to clear your browser cookies and re-login your gmail account or try a brand new browser (I switch from FireFox to Chrome) and then go to this link until you see this screenshot

2. Click the link (Skip the guided setup) - red arrow in picture you will be redirected to

3. Click the blue button "Save and Continue" and walla:

4. Final step: Click Tools ->> Keyword Planner and you're in

Okay so we're all in. Let's have a first look at Google Keyword Planner interface.

There are 4 selections you can choose to research for your keywords. But we mostly use 2 first selections and especially option 1. So now in this article we mainly focus on two first selections

A quick overview of these selections:

1. Search for keyword and ad group ideas

In this selection, Google will help you to show suggested keywords based on keywords you enter. This is very helpful because with its huge database, Google will show you the most relevant keywords and the best suggestions for you when you have no idea.

It will also categorize those suggested keywords into ad groups so you will have more idea on how to choose categories for your website

2. Get search volume for a list of keywords or group them into ad groups

Instead of getting a list of suggested keywords from some keywords you enter, in this selection, you will need to fill in a list of keywords which you prepared (or you can upload a text file which contains your list of keywords), and then you will get data of search volumes, CPC of those keywords. It's simple as that

3. Get traffic forecasts for a list of keywords

This selection only applies to Adwords advertisers allowing them to assess traffic forecasts for a given keyword. So actually you can just ignore this option

4. Multiply keywords lists to get new keyword ideas

The last selection helps you to combine 2 list of keywords to find relevant keywords.

Next we will go into more detailed

Selection #1: Search for new keyword and ad group ideas

This tool is the most powerful tool of Google Keyword Planner and we will use this tool mostly for our SEO/PPC campaign. So what does it look like

Look like it has a lot of features. Do you need to use all of them for each research campaign? Actually no. You do not have to use all of its features but the more features you use, the more relevant keywords you could get. I will explain all of them a little bit more detailed

Enter Information Zone

This is the main zone the first selection. You will enter your keywords, web page or your niche/category here to get suggested data from Google

Your product or service

In this box you will enter a keyword or some keywords (seperated by a comma or one keyword per line). They can be general words, products name, or even a long words, which came up from your mind. Some examples are "weight loss", "music software", "dog training"...... Enter them and then hit the blue button "Get Ideas" at the bottom and you will receive the result page below:

We will deeply analyze this result page later

Your landing page

In this box you can enter any web pages like homepage, category page or even an article page. It will help you to extract relevant keywords from the web page you enter. This is very helpful when you want to know which keywords are your competitors or your friend's website using.

Your product category

In this box you can enter your own niche/category or you can hit the drop down button on the right to select your right categories from the list. The more specific categories you enter/choose, the more relevant keywords you would receive.

Targeting Zone

This zone will help you to reach the most targeted customers for your business

Location: This option allows you to choose which location you want to get data from. It could be a country, a city or a region. This is helpful because if you offer a local service for New Jersey in example, why would you waste your advertising budget to show your ads to Nevada's people. So that if you choose location wisely you could minimize your budget and increase your chance to make more sales.
Languages: I mostly choose English as my language because English is the most popular language. Almost countries now can speak and understand English. But let's say you offer a service just only for German, so you should choose your location as Germany and your language as German
Google or Google and search partners: Search partners extend the reach of Search ads to hundreds of non-Google websites (like AOL), as well as Google Maps, YouTube, and other Google sites. But we are mainly focus on Google now so you can leave this box alone
Negative keywords: In this box you can enter some words which you don't want them to be appeared in your results. Like if you are doing PPC campaign, you might don't need some words like "free", "info", "definition"... to be appeared in your keywords which you're going to targeted. Because keywords contains those negative words will not bring sales, leads but just information. In example: If you want to sell men shoes, your keyword to enter the "Your product or service" box will be shoes and your negative words will be "women", "woman"...

Customize your search zone

This zone is similar to targeting zone but to narrow down your search range to suit your criteria. You will get thousands of keywords when you hit the button "Get Ideas" but you only need those keywords which are high potential. You don't need zero search keywords or non-sense keywords. So that you need to custimize your search

Keyword filters: This option allows you to choose which keywords you want Google to show you based on how many of search volumes or how much of suggested bids. Like if you want to get only keywords which have more than 1000 searches per month (I always apply this filter when searching for my desired keywords) or only keywords which have suggested bid below $1 (for PPC campaign) then this option is really helpful for you. We always want to get high search volume because we can reach more people. It's simple theory
Keyword Options: This option is only for Adwords advertisers and don't have much importance so I recommend to leave it alone
Keywords to include: In contrary to negative keywords, in this box you will type some keywords which you absolutely want them to be appeared in your results keywords. They might be informational word like "how to", "guide", "tutorial" (when you need high traffic) or buyer words like "buy", "cheap", "for sale", "best" (when you do PPC campaign). This is very important because buyer keywords are convert best. I love this option and I use it frequently to find my best keywords

The last zone: Date range

Some people will ignore this option because they don't think it is important. But I don't agree with them. The default date range when searching for new keyword and ad group ideas is for the last 12 months. This is good because we all want new, fresh and updated data till this time we do the research. Google calculates the average number of searches for the exact keyword based on the date range

But in some cases, if you're looking for highly seasonal keywords or topics or you may want to examine search volume for a smaller range of time. This will give you a better estimate of the keyword’s recent popularity.

For example, the average search volume in world wide over the last 12 months for “samsung note 4” is 550,000. That’s a lot! But if we explore the number of searches on just 2 last months, it comes up to 1,830,000, even better. That because of Samsung Note 4 is just released and it's still hot. This is a much more accurate picture of current search interest in this keyword.

Selection #2: Get search volume for a list of keywords or group them into ad groups

This feature helps you to get information about search volume, suggested bids for a list of keywords that you fill in or upload from a text file. No more generating new ideas, keywords here

Enter Keywords: You type in or paste a list of keywords here.
Upload File: You can either upload .txt file or CSV file here and then hit the button "Get search volume"
Targeting & Date range are the same as I explained above

So not much talk about this feature but it's really helpful when you have a list of keywords in hand and you want to check their data quickly. This list can be shared by a friend or download from the internet (many product's vendors give you a list of keywords to promote)
Selection #3: Get traffic forecasts for a list of keywords

I will ignore this selection because it's just for Adwords advertisers and we need to have an Adwords campaign to use this feature

Selection #4: Multiply keywords lists to get new keyword ideas

This tool allows you to generate thousands of combinations from 2-3 lists of keywords which provided by you. This feature maybe helpful for you because you will see some great combinations which you may not think it can be happened

As you can see there are 2 box which you can enter 2 lists of keywords into. You can make 1 more box as the List 3 by click the "X" symbol on the right of List 2

After finish filling in all list, just hit the button "Get Search Volume" then we will go into the result page

Okay so we already know about those features which GKP offer and learn to know how they work. Now we're going straight to the result page, where we get all of information we want to see.

The Keywords Result Page

With the first selection, search for keyword and ad group ideas, after hitting the blue button, you will be redirect to something looks like this:

As you can see that I want to get suggested keywords for the search term "weight loss". On the left sidebar, they are targeting and filtering option. You can edit them anytime you want while searching. After editing any option, this page will reload to apply that filter and show you new results. I leave them as default just for example

Right below the keyword entered box is the Average monthly searches. From this chart you will know which month has the highest searches and which month has lowest search along with the number of searches

Next, we have two tabs: “Ad group ideas” and “Keyword ideas”:

On the tab Ad group ideas, you can get some ideas for your website's categories or some great keywords for your PPC campaign. But we will focus mostly on the next tab

Click on the tab Keyword ideas, you will see this:

I will quickly explain all factors in this page

Keyword (by relevance): All keywords which are related to your search term
Avg. monthly searches: The average number of times people have searched for this exact keyword based on the date range and targeting settings that you've selected
Competition: Many people think that this factor represents the level of how hard to rank the keyword on the left. If this is "High" so the keyword is extremely hard to rank. If this is "Low" so the keyword is easy to rank. But it's absolutely WRONG!!!This factor is the number of advertisers worldwide bidding on each keyword relative to all keywords across Google. If the keyword has the high competition then you have to bid higher to win the high ad position. So that CPC will be increased. You will only need to pay attention to this factor if you're an Adwords advertiser
Suggested Bids (CPC): This is how much advertisers are paying to advertise selected keyword. The amount is only a forecast, and your actual cost-per-click may vary. You will need to bid higher than that cost to increase your ad's chance to appear on high position

Quick tip: Click on any factor's name to sort the column from highest to lowest or from lowest to highest

When you enter very popular search terms, Google will give you keyword suggestions and the maximum results is 800, but each page will only show from 30 to 100 results. So you can download all results to your computer in CSV format.

Okay that's all about Google Keyword Planner tutorial that I want to share. I hope you will enjoy my post

Thank you!
