National:

22 of India’s Satyagraha sites in Unesco list

A tentative list of World Heritage Sites prepared by UNESCO includes 22 places and sites across the country associated with Bapu’s non-violent movement for India’s freedom. Of these, seven are located in Gujarat. And out of the seven sites in the state, four — Sabarmati Ashram, Kochrab Ashram, Gujarat Vidhyapith and the starting point of the Dandi March route — are located in Ahmedabad. Incidentally, the Satyagraha sites in the city were not included in the final dossier submitted to the UN body for the World Heritage City status for Ahmedabad. Their names were forwarded by the central government to the UN body which included them in its tentative list. The 22 sites are listed under the ‘Satyagraha’ head, and all of them figure in the tentative list prepared before a final dossier was submitted to the UN body. Further, they are indexed in the cultural heritage category of the UNESCO list.

Surya namaskar made compulsory in 48,000 schools Rajasthan

Amid protests from different corners, the education department issued orders for government and private schools to introduce surya namaskar in all secondary and senior secondary classes with immediate effect.  The order issued by office of director secondary education, Rajasthan says that every secondary and senior secondary school has to hold 20 minute assembly or bal sabhas everyday which includes surya namaskar, meditation and paper reading. Effectively this order will be applicable for little over 48,000 schools including 28,000 government schools (secondary and above).

Centre announces Rs 850 crore package, tax sops for Andhra Pradesh

The Centre has approved a Rs 850 crore development package and adhoc support to Andhra Pradesh as also tax sops to help the state attract investments in the industrial sector. A Finance Ministry statement said, funds amounting to Rs 350 crore will be provided to Government of Andhra Pradesh during 2014-15 for its development activities in its seven backward districts. The Centre will also provide appropriate fiscal measures, including offer of tax incentives, to the successor States, to promote industrialization and economic growth in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The manufacturing industries set up in the backward region will be given 15 per cent additional depreciation on new plant and machinery in the first year of installation.

LC Goyal takes charge after Anil Goswami removed as Home Secretary

LC Goyal assumed charge as new Home Secretary, a day after Anil Goswami was sacked over his alleged role in trying to stall the arrest of former Congress minister Matang Sinh in the multi-crore-rupee Saradha scam. Goswami handed over his resignation to Home Minister Rajnath Singh. It was subsequently accepted by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of LC Goyal, IAS, secretary, department of rural development, as home secretary for a period of two years from the date of taking over charge vice Anil Goswami. Goyal is an IAS officer of 1979 batch.

Lung cancer kills more women than breast cancer in developed countries

Lung cancer is now the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in developed nations, beating out breast cancer which had long been the top killer. Researchers said, the change reflects trends in tobacco use. The new analysis was led by researchers at the American Cancer Society in collaboration with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in France. The findings are published in Global Cancer Statistics, A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, and Global Cancer Facts and Figures 3rd Edition. The data comes from worldwide estimates of cancer incidence and mortality produced by the IARC in 2012.

Russia bans flight to Libya over safety reasons

Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsiya has said that all Russian airlines have been banned from flying to the Libyan capital of Tripoli. Foreign commercial flights to Libya were canceled in July 2014 when fighting between the opposing sides intensified in Tripoli’s main airport. However, some flights from Libya to mainland Europe resumed in January. Libya is currently facing its worst wave of violence since the 2011. One of the country’s main international airports near the city of Benghazi has been closed since spring in 2014 due to ongoing fighting in the city.

Plane with 53 passengers crashes in Taipei

A Taiwanese commercial flight with 53 passengers aboard clipped a bridge shortly after takeoff and crashed into the Keelung River in the island’s capital of Taipei. Taiwan state media reports 15 dead in crash of passenger flight into Taipei river after takeoff. The plane was identified as a French-made twin-engine turboprop ATR 72 with a two-pilot air crew. The accident comes just months after a TransAsia ATR-72 crashed while attempting to land on the island of Penghu off Taiwan’s coast, killing 47 people and injuring another 10. Stormy weather and low visibility were suspected as factors in that crash in July 2014.

Jordan executes two jihadists after Islamic State murders pilot

Jordan executed two Iraqi jihadists, including a woman would-be suicide bomber; in response to the burning alive of one of its fighter pilots by the Islamic State group. The gruesome murder of airman Maaz al-Kassasbeh triggered condemnation from governments across the Middle East. Jordan said it hanged Sajida al-Rishawi and Al-Qaeda member Ziad al-Karboli — who were both on death row — before dawn at a prison south of the capital. Rishawi (44) was sentenced to death for her participation in triple hotel bombings in Amman in 2005 that killed 60 people. IS had offered to spare Kassasbeh’s life and free Japanese journalist Kenji Goto — who was later beheaded — if she were released.

Bank of Maharashtra launches MahaMobile

Bank of Maharashtra launched its new mobile banking app — MahaMobile, which will enable the bank’s customers to view all their deposit and loan accounts, do fund transfers, bill payments and raise a variety of service requests on their mobile anytime, anywhere. Any Bank of Maharashtra customer, with a debit card and registered mobile number, can register for this facility even without visiting the branch. The app is available for download on all the major app stores.

Panacea Biotec gets PAHO order for $13.5 m

Panacea Biotec said it had received an order worth $13.49 million for supplying EasyFive-TT vaccine to global health agency Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO). The 5-in-1 vaccine protects infants from five potentially deadly diseases: Haemophilus Influenza type B (the bacteria that causes meningitis, pneumonia and otitis), Whooping Cough, Tetanus, Hepatitis B and Diphtheria. In a BSE filing, Panacea said it had been elected for the supply of pentavalent vaccine DTP-HepB-Hib by the PAHO.

Nat’l Games: Haryana wrestlers take 18 golds; Replaces Services from top spot in medals table

On Day 4 of the 35th National Games at Thiruvananthapuram, Haryana continued to reign supreme in Wrestling, as they bagged 5 Gold to sign off with a whopping 18 yellow metals. Among the winners were, Rajendra Kumar in the 59 kg Greco-Roman category, Amit Dhankar in the 70 kg freestyle and Priyanka in 53kg freestyle category. With this, Haryana overtook two-time defending champions Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) at the top of the medals table. Haryana is now at the top with 21 Gold, 8 Silver and 4 Bronze. SSCB is second with 21 Gold, 5 Silver and 9 Bronze. Maharashtratook is third with 14 Gold, 18 Silver and 14 Bronze.

Kenya marathoner Jeptoo gets two-year ban for doping

Top Kenyan female marathon runner Rita Jeptoo has been handed a two-year ban after being caught doping with the banned blood-boosting hormone EPO. The ban, announced by the local governing body Athletics Kenya, is the minimum mandatory punishment she was facing under international anti-doping regulations in place when she was caught in an out-of competition test 2014. Rita Jeptoo has been banned for two years, effective from 30th October 2014 to 29th October 2016, following the results of the A and B samples which showed she had used the prohibited substance EPO.
