National:

PM flags off train connecting Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh with New Delhi

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stressed upon improving the rail, road and air connectivity for ensuring rapid development in the North East region. He was addressing a gathering after flagging-off the Naharlagun-New Delhi air-conditioned train at Indira Gandhi Park in Itanagar. He described the new train as a gift to the people of Arunachal Pradesh on the 29th Foundation Day of their State. With the launch of this train, Itanagar has become the second State capital , after Guwahati, in the North East region to have a direct express train for Delhi. The train will cover a distance of 2142 kilometers in about 38 hours via Rangiya, New Jalpaiguri, Gorakhpur, Lucknow and Kanpur. Since those arriving in Arunachal Pradesh will need the statutory Inner Line Permits, the Naharlagun station also has a special counter for issuing the same to the incoming passengers.

CCEA gives nod to various highway projects

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given its approval for the six laning of the Chakeri-Allahabad section of National Highway – 2 in Uttar Pradesh. This work will be under the National Highways Development Project Phase-V. The cost is estimated to be nearly Rs 2000 crore. The CCEA has also given its approval for the six laning of the Handia-Varanasi section of National Highway- 2 in the state. The CCEA gave its approval for the six laning of the Baleshwar-Chandikhole section of National Highway- 5 in Odisha. The CCEA also approved the development of the four/Six laning of the Raipur-Bilaspur section of National Highway in Chhatisgarh.

UP govt to launch 1,000 Agri-Junctions across state

In Uttar Pradesh, the state Government will launch about one thousand “Agri-Junctions”. Budgetary provisions are likely to be made in the state budget to be tabled. The scheme of opening “Agri Junctions” aims to provide not only farm inputs and equipments to the farmers, but also business opportunities to rural youth and employment to agriculture graduates. The scheme will provide opportunity to the shortlisted agriculture graduates to run the agriculture junctions. Lucknow based State Agricultural Management and Training Institute will provide training to the shortlisted agriculture graduates.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra-2015 to be conducted from June 8

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra-2015 will be conducted from the 8th of June to 9th of September 2015. The routes for the Yatra will be via Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and via Nathu La Pass in Sikkim. The Yatra route via Nathula pass is a totally motorable one and will be opened on the 18th of June. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said that applications to participate in the Yatra can be filed online at kmy.gov.in and the last date for applying is the 10th of April. Eighteen batches of 60 members each will be sent through Lipulekh Pass at an estimated cost of one lakh fifty thousand rupees per person, whereas five batches of 50 members each will take the other route via Nathu La. On this route, a pilgrim needs to pay one lakh seventy thousand rupees.

France’s Socialist government wins confidence vote over reforms

France’s Socialist government has won a confidence vote tied to its economic reform package. A total of 234 mainly opposition deputies voted for the motion of no-confidence, far short of the number required to bring down the government. The emergency vote was sparked when Prime Minister Manuel Valls employed a rarely-used constitutional device to force through a key package of reforms without a parliamentary vote. The government says they are vital to unblock the eurozone’s second-biggest economy, which is suffering from chronically high unemployment and sluggish growth.

US, Turkey sign deal to train, arm Syrian rebels

The United States and Turkey have signed a deal to train and equip Syrian opposition forces. The US military said it plans to send more than 400 troops to train Syrian moderates at sites outside Syria as part of the fight against Islamic State militants. The US will train about 5,000 fighters from the Free Syrian Army a year for three years. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey have publicly offered to host training sites.

Tapan Misra takes over as ISRO’s Space Applications Centre director

Tapan Misra, Scientist and Deputy Director, Microwave Remote Sensing Area of ISRO’s Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad, has assumed the office of the Director, SAC. Tapan Misra graduated in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, in 1984. He was awarded the prestigious Sir JC Bose National Talent Search (JBNSTS) Scholarship in 1981. He began his career at SAC as digital hardware engineer responsible for the development of Quick Look Display System of X-band Side Looking Airborne Radar in the year 1984. He developed an important algorithm for real time processing of SAR data during his tenure as Guest Scientist in German Aerospace Agency (DLR) in 1990.

Govt launches single window e-biz portal to foster business environment

The government has launched a single window e-Biz portal for 11 Central government services to bring transparency and ease of doing business in the country. The project will help in fostering the business environment in the country in a holistic manner. The government’s approach includes leveraging technology to bring transparency and to improve efficiency and promote convenience. The portal will provide four services from Ministry of Corporate Affairs, two services of Central Board of Direct Taxes, two services of Reserve Bank of India and one service each from Directorate General of Foreign Trade, Employees Provident Fund Organization and Petroleum and explosives Safety Organization. A business user can avail the service any time from February 20, 2015.

Govt to remove minimum export price on potato

The Government has decided to remove the minimum export price of 450 dollars per tonne on the export of potato in view of the prevailing lower prices and higher domestic availability of potato. The removal of existing MEP on potato will help farmers in realising better and remunerative prices. It will also help the exporters in earning valuable foreign exchange for the country through exports. In 2014, Commerce and Industry Ministry had imposed MEP of 450 US dollars per tonne on potato to check its rising prices and augment domestic supplies.

FIPB clears 11 FDI proposals worth Rs.1,076 cr

he Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) has cleared foreign investment in 11 entities, entailing Rs.1,075.91 crore, and referred proposals worth Rs.4,187 crore in pharma firms — Glenmark and Aurobindo — to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.

Anil Kumble to be inducted in ICC Cricket Hall of Fame

Former India Captain and ace Leg Spinner Anil Kumble has been chosen to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame with all times greatest cricketers. He will be felicitated and inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame during the ICC Cricket World Cup match between India and South Africa in Melbourne on February 22.  Anil Kumble who is now the Chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee, is the fourth India cricketer to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. He joins the ranks of illustrious cricketers like Bishen Singh Bedi, Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar who were inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009.The veteran wrist spinner has taken 619 Test wickets and is the third highest wicket-taker in Test cricket after 800 wickets by Muttiah Muralidaran and 708 wickets by Shane Warne . He has also claimed 337 wickets in ODIs making him the ninth most successful all-time great bowlers in that format. Kumble has led team India as the Captain in 14 Tests between 2007 and 2008.

Sea Hawks set world open-sea swim record

They conquered the open sea, setting a world record and doing their bit to create social awareness. A six-man relay team, led by Wing Commander Paramvir Singh, swam from Goa to Mumbai in 156 hours, breaking an Israeli team’s record. The Sea Hawks, the Indian open water swim team, set off from Dona Paula in Goa to the Gateway of India, covering 490 km along the Konkan coastline in 156 hours. The attempt was in support of the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” national mission, and the money raised from the swim would be donated to Project Nanhi Kali started by Anand Mahindra, which supports the cause of education of the underprivileged girl child in India.
