National:

Akhilesh presents Yash Bharti awards

Classical singer Shubha Mudgal , actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, journalist Vinod Mehta, Sufi singer Rahat Ali Khan Sabri, wrestler Alka Tomar, playback singer Kailash Kher, Urdu poet Bekal Utsahi, music director Ravindra Jain and bhajan singer Anup Jalota were among the 56 eminent personalities who were honoured with the prestigious Yash Bharti award. The awards are for the years 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. The Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar and Rani Laxmibai award for bravery was given to Seema Tiwari and Resham Fatima respectively. The Yash Bharti award is given to eminent persons from the State in the fields of art, culture, sports, literature, medicine, journalism and social service.

HP govt to honour 50 gram Panchayats for improving child sex ratio

Himachal Pradesh government will honour 50 gram Panchayats for improving child sex ratio in the age group of 0 to 6 years as per the census of year 2011. District level functions would be organised to honour these panchayats and the first function would be held in Una district. The tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti has an excellent record in maintaining the best sex ratio not only in the state but in the country also. There were 1033 girls against 1000 boys in the district.

West Bengal to empower women through vocational training

The West Bengal government has taken up a scheme for empowering women through vocational training. The state government has tied up with leading cosmetic and beauty care firms for imparting vocational training in beautician courses to girls across villages of the State at free of cost. After the grand success of Kanyasree Prakalpa the West Bengal government has moved another step forward in empowering women. Currently the beautician course is being imparted to Secondary pass girls belong to Other Backward Classes in the age group of 18 to 35 years. It is a three months course with four hours training for four days in a week. Once the training is over the State Government will provide loan to girls to open their beauty parlour individually or in a group.

Punjab colleges to be tobacco-free

All private and government universities of Punjab will soon become “tobacco-free”. Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Vini Mahajan has written to Vice-Chancellors and the principals of the affiliated colleges to implement the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COTPA) on their campuses. Punjab was the first State in India to ban the sale of loose cigarettes (as single sticks) to dissuade consumers and the Tobacco Control Cell of the State had been aggressively pursuing the agenda to bring down tobacco consumption in Punjab and banning of loose cigarettes was a step in that direction. Under Section 4 of COTPA, smoking in public places is prohibited & under Section 6 of COTPA, tobacco selling is not allowed within 100 yards of any educational institution.

International:

Colombia’s FARC rebels invite Miss Universe to attend peace talks

Colombia’s marxist FARC rebels have invited the newly-crowned Miss Universe Paulina Vega, a native of the country’s Caribbean coast, to attend their peace negotiations with the government, a bid to end 50 years of fighting. The 22-year-old Vega, a business student and model from the northern city of Barranquilla, was named Miss Universe in late January and has said in interviews that she would be willing to travel to the talks. FARC, which has been holding negotiations with the government in Cuba since 2012.

Business & Economy:

GDP growth estimated at 7.4% for 2014-15, Oct-Dec growth at 7.5%

The Indian economy is forecast to grow 7.4% in 2014-15 after a robust 7.5% expansion in the October-December quarter, overtaking China as one of the fastest growing major economies but the data surprised economists. Data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showed the economy is expected to grow faster than previous fiscal’s 6.9% and above the expected 5.5% growth under the old series. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had forecast that the India will outpace China’s growth in 2016-17.

Govt to infuse Rs. 6,990 crore in nine public sector banks

Government will infuse Rs. 6,990 crore in nine public sector banks including SBI, Bank of Baroda (BoB) and Punjab National Bank (PNB) for enhancing their capital and meeting global risk norms. This is the first tranche of capital infusion for which the government had allocated Rs. 11,200 crore in the budget for 2014-15. Among the beneficiaries, SBI leads the pack with a capitalization of Rs. 2,970 crore, followed by BoB Rs. 1,260, PNB Rs. 870 crore and Canara Bank Rs. 570 crore.

Govt. gives Gauri Shankar additional charge of PNB MD

The Union government gave additional charge of Managing Director and CEO of Punjab National Bank to Gauri Shankar, senior most executive director at the bank. He has been entrusted the additional charge with immediate effect.

Gamesa, Greenko in pact for 300 MW projects

Gamesa and Greenko have signed a new business agreement to commission 300 MW wind power projects in India. The first phase of 160 MW has been secured and Gamesa is installing its multi-MW turbines in identified sites in Karnataka and Rajasthan, which is expected to be commissioned by June this year. The second phase of 140 MW, expected to be secured by April 2015, will be commissioned by September 2015.

National Games: Archer Deepika Kumari steers Jhakhand to Golds in recurve team events

Archer Deepika Kumari steered Jharkhand to Gold in the Recurve Women’s and Mixed team events at the 35th National Games in Kerala. The former Commonwealth and Asian Games medalist, however, surprisingly missed out on an individual podium finish. Services won both the individual and team gold in Men’s triathlon. Services is way ahead at the top of the medals tally with 51 Gold, 16 Silver and 17 Bronze. Maharashtra is second, with Haryana third.

Mizoram takes football gold

Mizoram’s brave little warriors won the National Games gold, beating Punjab 1-0 in the final. The gold-medal winning goal was scored by Imanuel Lalthazuala in the 83rd minute. Punjab, for the second National Games in a row, had to settle for silver. Maharashtra was on third place.

Shooter Suma Shirur wins silver in Holland

Rifle shooter Suma Shirur won the silver at the Inter-shoot annual International Shooting Championship for Air Pistol and Air Rifle, at The Hague in Netherlands. The former world record holder got the second place with a gritty finish in 10 m air rifle at the Inter-Shoot where she scored 203 points in the finals.
