Who says you can’t wear blue eye shadow and orange lipstick? Not Sarah Lucero. As Stila’s Global Director of Education and Artistry, she’s spent the past 15 years developing one-of-a-kind looks for celebrities and fashion shows. A total pro at mixing unexpected colors, she shared her tips for creating five shade combos that defy convention.

When it comes to pairing makeup colors that seem to clash—like orange and blue— Lucero has a couple golden rules: First, limit yourself to two or three hues. Secondly, make sure you stick to either all warm tones (think: burnt sienna, earthy plum, and khaki) or all cool tones (like icy blue, seafoam green, and silver). Whether you prefer warm or cool shades, Lucero’s most important advice when it comes to playing with color is to “wear it like you mean it.”

The So-Called Clash: Turquoise, Purple, Pink

1. Prep skin with Stay All Day® 10-in-1 HD Bronzing Beauty Balm in place of your foundation. Highlight your cheekbones, brow bones and cupid’s bow using the All Over Shimmer Liquid Luminizer in Kitten.

2. Dust lids from lash line to crease using Glance from the In The Moment Eye Shadow Palette. Line upper lids using Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Peacock, starting at the inner corners and stopping midway. Finish lining eyes with Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Purple Tang, from midway to outer corners. Carefully extend the line up a touch past the eye, then wrap color down along lower lashes and blend with a shadow brush. Finish with a few coats of Glamoroueyes Mascara.

3. Using the #1 Blush Brush, sweep the apples of your cheeks with Pink Glow Baked Cheek Duo.

4. Sweep lips with Fruit Punch Lip Glaze for a sheer pop of pink.

The So-Called Clash: Turquoise, Bright Orange, Indigo, and Coral

1. Apply Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 to your entire face and Lightly top with Set & Illuminate Baked Powder Trio to create a subtle glow.

2. Using the #9 Blending Brush dust your entire lid, from lash line to brow bone, with [Mimosa Eye Shadow](product 340), accentuating inner corners with the same shadow in Poppy. Line upper lashes with Stay All Day® Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Indigo, flicking the pen outward and up to create a bold cat-eye. Finish with 2-3 coats of Glamoureyes Mascara.

3. Using your fingers, lightly tap the apples of your cheeks with Convertible Color Cream in Gerbera and blend.

4. Sweep lips with Grapefruit Lip Glaze for a fruity (yet totally natural) burst of color.

The So-Called Clash: Charcoal Grey, Black, and Bright Red

1. Create a flawless canvas for your makeup by applying [Stay All Day® 10-in-1 HD Illuminating Beauty Balm] in place of foundation.

2. Lightly dust your entire lid with [Stila’s Eye Shadow](product 340) in Cloud. Starting at your inner corners, line upper lashes with Stay All Day® Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Alloy, a silvery grey, extending the line past your eye and bringing it down to the corner of your lower lashes, like a "V." Finish with a few coats of Glamoureyes Mascara.

3. Using the #1 Blush Brush, sweep your cheeks with Pink Glow Baked Cheek Duo, brushing up towards your cheekbones.

4. Who says you have to choose between a bold eye and a bold lip? Power up your pout with Stay All Day® Liquid Lipstick in Beso, a bold red that stays put with a velvety-matte finish.

The So-Called Clash: Grey, Coral, and Hot Pink

1. Even out your complexion using [Stay All Day® 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm SPF 30].

2. If you’re curious about color, but not ready to go all-out, try this pastel look: Draw a thick (and we mean thick!) cat eye using Stay All Day® Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Alloy. Create a “double-liner” effect by tracing your upper lashes with a thinner cat eye using Stay All Day® Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Intense Black. Finish with a few coats of Glamoureyes Mascara.

3. Using Stila’s #1 Blush Brush, dust Custom Color Blush in Self-Adjusting Pink on the apples of your cheeks.

4. Paint lips with Stay All Day® Liquid Lipstick in Aria, topped with a swipe of Watermelon Lip Glaze, to create a lavender-pink lip.

The So-Called Clash: Green, Purple, and Coral

1. After applying [Stay All Day® 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm SPF 30], highlight cheekbones with a few dabs of All Over Shimmer Liquid Luminizer in Kitten.

2. Draw a thick cat eye using Stay All Day® Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Moss. Create the “double-liner” effect from look #4 by tracing your upper lashes with a thinner cat eye using Stay All Day® Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Indigo. Sweep the outer edges of your lower lashes with Moss. Finish with Glamoureyes Mascara.

3. Tap the apples of your cheeks with Convertible Color Cream in Gerbera and blend with your fingers.

4. Finish with Stay All Day® Liquid Lipstick in Bellissima for a soft, petal pink pout.
