Notification for Ph. D position : Doctoral student in Biology with specialization in Molecular Biophysics

Department of Cell and molecular biology (ICM) is one of the most international, wide and prominent biomolecular institutions in Europe. Our research is divided into six programs covering everything from Cell Biology to biophysics of individual molecules. This PhD position is placed in the group of Molecular Biophysics.

Project description :

Molecular biophysics is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field of research, which successfully combines physics, chemistry and biology.

The development of new X-ray laser sources with extreme intensity and short pulse duration has the potential to change photo science basically.

These X-ray sources is currently the brightest, with up to 10 billion times the photon density than the synchrotrons used so far as X-ray sources.

One of our goals is to develop the technology necessary for high resolution imaging of individual biological objects using these techniques.

According to theoretical and practical results, the short pulse duration make it possible to record a diffraction pattern before the intense radiation has time to destroy the sample.

The project involves more specifically the preparation of samples suitable for "single molecule" imaging and serial femtosecond X-ray structure determination as "diffraction-before-destruction" principle.

The project also involves the development and testing of Instruments for the introduction of samples, characterization of the sample X-ray pulse interactions and diagnostics.

Parts of the experimental work will be carried out at large scale experimental facilities as Linac Coherent Light Source at Stanford, the European free electron laser in Hamburg, Germany, which will become operational during the time of the PhD project, The Extreme Light Infrastructure in Prague, Teckien, Maxlab in Lund and possibly at additional sites in Switzerland, Japan and Korea.

Eligibility :

Applications are invited from highly motivated candidates with a science or engineering degree at Masters level.

The candidate is expected to have a clear background in molecular biology, Biochemistry or structural biology.

In addition, the applicant is expected to have documented practical experience of common molecular biological / biochemical techniques such as cell culture, viral culture / purification, Protein purification, gelkörning, PCR, liquid chromatography, ultracentrifugation, etc..

Since the experiments will generate huge amounts of data that need to be analyzed using computers, are proven programming experience in various programming languages an advantage.

Very good oral and written proficiency in English is required.

Appointment as a graduate student requires that the holder is admitted or will be admitted to doctoral education, where the degree of ability to benefit from research training is crucial.

The PhD student will primarily devote themselves to their graduate program.

How to Apply :

Application should include a curriculum vitae (CV), copies of certificates and relevant examination certificates, degree (at least a summary), any publications, and a personal letter describing your research interests and why you are interested in postgraduate location.

We prefer that you attach letters of recommendation or provide details of two referees.

Uppsala University is striving to promote gender equality through gender balance.

Most employees in this category are male, we would like to see female applicants to the site.

Dead Line : No later than 5 March, 2014
