Western Michigan University invites applications and nominations for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Exercise Science in the Department of Human Performance and Health Education.

Major Responsibilities: Teaching courses in the undergraduate (B.S.) exercise science and graduate (M.S) exercise physiology programs; supervising student research; conducting research and pursuing external funding; participating in academic scholarship and service as required by the department, college and university for all tenure-track positions; additional duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Qualifications: Earned Doctorate in exercise science, biomechanics, exercise physiology, or kinesiology; evidence of successful teaching experience at the university/college level; capacity to incorporate technology in instructional settings; evidence of a scholarly agenda (grants, publications, consultation); capacity to advise students, supervise student research and field experiences, HFS, CES or RCEP ACSM certification preferred. We are seeking a strong candidate in applied exercise science. Although research is a strong and necessary part of this position we are not seeking an individual who is a basic scientist. We are looking for a scientist who can conduct applied and translational research as part of their job responsibilities in a highly collaborative environment.

The College: The College of Education and Human Development is a diverse and vibrant institution of professional education, preparing individuals annually for leadership in their fields. The college is comprised of six departments which includes Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology; Special Education and Literacy Studies; Family and Consumer Sciences; Human Performance and Health Education; Teaching, Learning and Educational Studies; and Educational Leadership, Research and Technology. Approximately 100 regular FTE faculty serve nearly 3,700 undergraduate and nearly 1,800 graduate students, with majors enrolled in programs leading to the bachelor, specialist, master, and doctoral degrees.

Department: The Department of Human Performance and Health Education provides coursework and experiences which will allow students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes conducive to their employment as professionals within the allied fields of athletic training, coaching, exercise science, health, physical education, recreation, and sports management. The department offers six undergraduate majors, six undergraduate minors, and six master’s-level graduate programs. Approximately 19 regular FTE faculty serve nearly 730 undergraduate majors, 200 undergraduate minors, and 160 graduate majors. The Department has a well-equipped exercise science laboratory that includes an environmental chamber, metabolic measurement systems, temperature and blood flow monitors, a stress testing system, a biochemistry area, and a 3D biomechanical analysis system.
