The University of Virginia, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, is seeking a highly motivated applicant to join the Center for Applied Biomechanics as Postdoctoral Research Associate. Responsibilities will include the analysis of the dynamic structural response of motor vehicles and vehicle parts in impact/crash simulations, the evaluation of occupant kinematics and occupant interaction with the vehicle, the assessment of occupant injury risk, and the design and/or evaluation of crash injury countermeasures. The candidate may also have an active role in the design and execution of mechanical impact and/or kinematics experiments to obtain computational model benchmarking data. Duties will include academic publishing in peer-reviewed conferences and journals, and collaboration with academic, industrial, and government research partners.

Qualified Candidates will have:

PhD in mechanical or a related engineering discipline

Demonstrated ability in finite element modeling, particularly with the LS-Dyna solver

Experience in not only simulation of vehicle and human body models, but development and evaluation of new models;

Experience developing FE meshes using HyperMesh or other similar software packages

Superior oral and written English communication skills

Candidates should also have demonstrated knowledge in biomechanics, vehicle crashworthiness, occupant protection, multi-body dynamics, finite element analysis, optimization, design of experiment, and/or general automotive safety. Applicants with experience in both human body and vehicle crash modeling, and at least familiarity with the Global Human Body Models Consortium (GHBMC) and the Total Human Model for Safety (THUMS) human models, are preferred. Experience in restraint and/or airbag modeling and familiarity with other analysis and modeling software packages including MADYMO, MATLAB, HyperMesh, NI DIAdem, SolidWorks, and ABAQUS is also preferred.

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Please include a CV/Resume, Cover Letter and Contact Information for 3 References - name, email, and phone number.
