The Department of Kinesiology at The Pennsylvania State University is searching for a full-time faculty member in the area of skeletal muscle/exercise physiology for a tenure-track or tenure position, beginning Fall 2014 at the assistant or associate professor rank. We seek candidates with strong research programs studying physiological mechanisms and/or interventions related to skeletal muscle adaptation using human, animal or cellular models. Candidates utilizing models with broad translational appeal including acute or chronic effects of exercise, physical activity and/or sedentary behavior in relation to aging, obesity / metabolic, skeletal or cardiac muscle diseases are of particular interest given existing strengths in the department.
Candidates must have an earned doctorate in an appropriate area within or related to Kinesiology and/or Physiology and demonstrate an established record of scholarship, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and service. The successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain a vigorous research program supported by extramural funding, and assume teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Preference will be given to candidates with post-doctoral experience and whose research and teaching interests advance the mission of our department and compliment current faculty interests.
The Department of Kinesiology offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees and is part of the College of Health and Human Development. Our graduate program is currently ranked #1 by both the National Research Council and the National Academy of Kinesiology. The educational environment is enriched by the considerable breadth and diversity of faculty expertise and educational opportunities for students in cardiovascular and environmental physiology, exercise endocrinology, biomechanics, and neural control of movement. Significant resources in areas pertinent to the study of integrative and/or muscle physiology exist, including research facilities and collaborations with multi-disciplinary Penn State organizations such as the Center for Healthy Aging, the Center for Childhood Obesity Research, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, Hershey Medical Center, and the Huck Institutes for the Life Sciences.
