POST-DOCTORAL POSITION IN HUMAN MOVEMENT SCIENCE, MOTOR CONTROL, BIOMECHANICS, NEUROSCIENCE, AND NEURO-REHABILITATION

A post-doctoral position has recently become available in the Reflex Movement and Spasticity Laboratory and the Neural Engineering Laboratory at the Sensory Motor Performance Program, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.
The successful candidate will participate in research experiments that examine the effects of physical and pharmacological interventions on neuromuscular properties and functional recovery in patients with neurological injuries, including those with spinal cord injury or stroke, with the goal of optimizing treatment.
The Neural Engineering lab and Reflex, Movement and Spasticity laboratories are equipped with several novel devices to study many different joints in human subjects. Using these labs, we can quantify reflexive and muscular properties, and investigate the effects of specific interventions on the properties of multiple joints. The LOKOMAT is also used for robotic-assisted treadmill training.
Opportunities exist to collaborate with neuroscience, physical medicine, and engineering faculty in our group, who specialize in neuro-rehabilitation, robotics in rehabilitation, neuromuscular systems, motor control, learning, modeling, and systems engineering.
Applicants should have a doctoral degree in motor control, human movement science, biomedical/mechanical/electrical engineering, neuroscience, physical therapy, kinesiology or a related discipline. Experience with the assessment of human movement, performance, function, or rehabilitation, biomechanical measurements, or motion analysis—particularly in populations with spinal cord injury or stroke –is highly desirable. A background in biostatistics, particularly in longitudinal analysis, is also desirable.
This is initially a ONE-YEAR appointment, which can start immediately. Salary is negotiable, and commensurate with experience.

SENSORY MOTOR PERFORMANCE PROGRAM
The Sensory Motor Performance Program (SMPP) at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) is devoted to the study of musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, and sensory disorders that are associated with abnormal control of posture and movement. Faculty members have appointments in the Northwestern University Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Northwestern University McCormick School of Engineering. Approximately 200 research staff - including post-doctoral research associates, graduate students, and support staff -- make up a unique team of physicians, engineers, mathematicians, physiologists, and occupational & physical therapists for the study of motor and sensory dysfunction.
