Georgetown’s Big Three had a day to remember.
Coming into the game with little margin for error for their NCAA Tournament hopes, the Georgetown Hoyas took care of business against the Marquette Golden Eagles, 80-62, Saturday afternoon at the Verizon Center.
The Hoyas were led by their three leading scorers on the season: Jessie Govan (game-high 23 points), LJ Peak (20) and Rodney Pryor (20). When 78% of your points come from three players, it’s pretty easy to pinpoint what went well. Additionally, Pryor grabbed 10 rebounds for his second double-double as a Hoya. Georgetown took the lead with 17 minutes left in the first half, and never trailed again.
The boom-or-bust Golden Eagles busted on Saturday, shooting just 3-14 from the three-point line. As noted above, Marquette played from behind for the entire game, essentially, and they struggled to get anything going. Jajuan Johnson led the way with 14 points in the defeat.
Both teams were perched precariously on either side of the bubble heading into Saturday afternoon, as Marquette was clinging to one of the last byes in most brackets, and Georgetown was in the First Four or Next Four Out in most. That will likely change for the worse for Marquette and the Big East in general, as the Golden Eagles will likely be on the outside looking in as they enter the homestretch of the season. Georgetown will likely still be on the outside, as well, but they have a slight glimmer of hope.
Marquette (15-10, 6-7) will have a full week off before welcoming Xavier to the Bradley Center in a pivotal contest next Saturday. Georgetown (14-12, 5-8) will travel to Omaha to face Creighton next Sunday.
