Series History

The Johnnies and Monarchs have met two times in their history. The last meeting between the two took place when head coach Chris Mullin was still a player as the then-No. 5 ranked Red Storm took ODU down 77-65. Prior to that, the two teams met in November 1977, which also proved to be in the Red Storm’s favor as they won 81-75.

The Stakes

No team wants to spend a stint through any tournament with a winless record. Not even when it takes place in a paradise resort. So, the St. John’s Red Storm and Old Dominion Monarchs will be vying for their first victory in the 2016 edition of the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament.

Players to Watch

Old Dominion | Brandan Stith: Stith has been one of ODU’s best contributors this year. He has posted the highest efficiency numbers of anyone on the team and has scored a combined 31 points in the two games that ODU has played so far in the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament.

St. John’s | Shamorie Ponds: The youngster has gotten off to a great start this year and has continued that during the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament. Ponds has scored a combined 30 points, pulled down six rebounds, chipped in three assists and has committed just two turnovers through 67 minutes of action. For a freshman, that last bit regarding turnovers is exceptional and pleasing to see, so all eyes will remain on the Brooklyn native as he hopes to help the Red Storm snap a three-game losing streak.
