(CP) - The Nova Scotia government has introduced legislation that would close an effluent treatment facility in Pictou County by 2020.
The bill is part of an agreement with the Pictou Landing First Nation to deal with effluent from the facility.
A leak was found last June in a pipe carrying wastewater from the mill to the treatment facility in Boat Harbour.
Chief Andrea Paul of the Pictou Landing First Nation says she is cautiously optimistic the facility will be closed.
The aboriginal community staged a blockade last June, alleging that effluent from the nearby Northern Pulp mill was polluting the harbour.
Internal Services Minister Labi Kousoulis says $52.3 million has been budgeted for the remediation of the Boat Harbour site.
