The rumor mill: it is a spinnin’.
The 2017 NFL Scouting Combine ends today, and tomorrow marks the beginning of ‘legal tampering’ for free agency. When you combine(no pun intended) those two elements together, you start to get a ton of leaks on potential moves teams might make on the free agent market. While there will be plenty of interesting and legitimate nuggets, there will also be some lackluster ones thrown out there. Well, we’ve got a report on one of those potential moves, and it’s a doozy. According to Todd Archer of ESPN, the Jaguars are one of multiple teams that keep being mentioned amongst NFL executives and coaches as a potential landing spot for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.
In private discussions with executives and coaches from teams across the league, Romo’s future destination kept coming back to two teams: the Denver Broncos and Houston Texans.
Others mentioned the Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers and even the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Right off the top, this seems like nothing more than some guys in the league playing potential matchmaker, noticing the Jags struggled with Blake Bortles under center last year, and pairing them with Romo. I seriously doubt there’s any substance to this, because it really wouldn't make sense for the Jags to do it.
Tony Romo will be 37 when the 2017 season starts, and he’s dealt with multiple major injuries. Romo had an early exit to the Cowboys season opener last year, and missed the rest of the season. in 2015, he only played in four games. Tony Romo might be a good fit for a team that’s ready to contend for a title in the next two years, but that’s not the Jaguars at all. Sure, they could afford to sign him, even though his contract will be quite large. By why tie up that cash on a pipe dream? Romo’s had a fine career, but he’s not going to turn the Jags into championship contenders over night.
I’ll take a hard pass on this one.
