Let’s talk about how to make your existing posts work for you!

You’ve published a post on your blog and maybe it did well or maybe you thought it might have done better if only Facebook liked you that day.  In any case, its moment has passed and you’re wondering if it really reached its target audience or its full potential.

Guess what?  There are plenty of sites that are more than happy to publish content that you have already published on your personal blog.  I know this because I do it all the time!  While it’s great to find time to write an original post for another site, most of us can’t do more than a few of those (at most) each month, due to time constraints and that little nagging thing called our own blog that also needs fresh content.

Take a look at some of our favorite websites that accept submissions of writing that has already been published on your own site.

1.  Better After 50 - Though I have not submitted here myself, this site publishes an impressive 25 articles per week and has really great traffic/reach, meaning some awesome exposure if you contribute.

“Online Magazine about Women inspiring Women Real Women-Real Stories.  Our readers and writers contribute essays in the categories of: SHE DID IT!, Your work, Your Finances, Sex Diaries, Aging Parents, Adult Children, Amazing Travels, Financial Planning, and Retirement. Of course we also deal with Relationships, Second Marriages, Divorce, Widowhood, Fashion (as in: Can I wear this at 50+?), and the big Kahuna known as Menopause.”

2.  BlogHer – BlogHer is a frequent stop for me, both with submitting content for possible syndication (payment) and also for immediately cross-posting my existing blog posts for more exposure.  The benefit here is that if they love a post, they may feature it, giving you even more exposure.  I love that in a matter of minutes, you can get in front of their readers with your posts.

“BlogHer is a platform for sharing great voices, stories and ideas.”.  With categories of food, family, style, love & sex, work/life, DIY, health, entertainment, news & politics, and blogs & social media, BlogHer covers a wide span of interests.

3.  Bonbon Break –  Another of my favorite places to both read and contribute, BonBon Break often selects submissions of existing posts to tease from their site, sending traffic directly to your site.

“BonBon Break is an online magazine for the modern mom.” covering “…advice, ideas, and inspiration in theforms of recipes, parenting tips, crafts, humor and more.”  Content is presented in a ‘rooms’ concept.

4.  Crazy Good Parent – If any of your past posts address parenting with mental illness, consider submitting to Crazy Good Parent to find your ideal audience.

“Crazy Good Parent was born out of my frustration at looking for support as a parent with a mental illness…connecting moms and dads trying to be the best parents we can be while managing our sometimes unruly minds”

5.  elephant journal - elephant Journal notes that “If any part of your work has been published previously, you must inform us in writing—or you legally guarantee our right to publish. If your work has been published previously elsewhere online, please update your article with a slightly new title and/or intro. This allows Google and other search engines to pick up the article as a new, unique article. Better for your article, better for elephant’s cred.”.

“We’re dedicated to sharing the good life beyond the choir, and to all those who didn’t yet know they give a care about living a good, fun life that’s good for others, and our planet. The mindful life is about yoga, organics, sustainability, conscious consumerism, enlightened education, the contemplative arts, adventure, bicycling, family…everything. But mostly it’s about this present moment, right here, right now, and how we can best be of benefit, and have a good time doing so.”

6.  Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop – This is the humor blog component to the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop site.  If it’s funny, this might be a good home for your post.  The submission process is old school with a quick turn around.

7.  The Good Men Project – Note: You may submit previously published work, but you must include all appropriate credits and links back to the original.

“We are having a conversation about what it means to be a man in the 21st century—and it is  wide and varied and mundane and provocative. But for a post to be considered, it must always must be about, by, for, or focused on men. (Please note that approximately 20% of our contributors are women. That’s great—we love women’s voices. But they write about men, or sometimes about raising boys who become men.)”

8.  The Huffington Post – While many would argue that it’s easier said than done to get your work accepted on The Huffington Post, they DO accept writing that has already been published on your blog, so if you think it would be a good fit, what do you have to lose?

Wikipedia described The Huffington Post as “...a liberal American online news aggregator and blog…The site offers news, blogs, and original content and covers politics, business, entertainment, environment, technology, popular media, lifestyle, culture, comedy, healthy living, women’s interests, and local news.“

9.  Mamapedia – Mamapedia is one of my go-to places when I know I have a piece that will be a really good fit.  I don’t bug them with anything I am not sure will be a good fit.  They are also a pleasure to work with and always seem to get commentary from readers.  I find this to be a great place to publish things I have recently published on my own blog.  Listen to the podcast linked below and submit via the Facebook group she mentions for best results.

“Mamapedia connects moms at every stage of their children’s lives to compelling content from the source they trust most: other moms. Every day, moms turn to Mamapedia.com for advice on everything moms need: parenting, health, family, finance, pregnancy, nutrition, and travel; and on children of every age from infant to adult.”

10.  Moms Magazine – I have not published here but was told by an editor that they are fine with previously published submissions as long as you hold the copyright, and it is still yours to publish.

“Moms Magazine is a community of parenting experts and moms just like you providing advice and sharing real-life experiences to help you with parenthood.”

Submission Guidelines

11.  Moms Who Write And Blog – A fairly new place to publish your parenting humor and more, this site is not picky about how recent your submission is and is eager to take great recycled content.

“We feature parent humor, mom lit, confessional, rants and raves, failed projects or failed recipes, a collection of funny photos or drawings, and inspirational stories.”

12.  Power of Moms – This is also not a place I have personally published, but as with all submissions, you’ll want to let them know if you are submitting something previously published on their own blog so they can make any title changes or other tweaks (as some sites do).

“A Gathering Place For Deliberate Mothers…Our focus is not on how to decorate, cook, potty-train, clean, etc., but to strengthen the woman inside the mother and inspire her to excellence.”.  Categories include a rotating seasonal category around Peace/Purpose/Order/Joy, Humore in Motherhood, Advice for Specific Ages and Stages, Timely Topics, Holiday/Seasonal Advice, How-To and Spiritual Sundays.

13.  Project: Underblog – One of my favorite sites, Project: Underblog promotes ‘small and mighty’ bloggers and is open to your previously published posts that were ideally posted to your own blog more than 30 days ago.

“…a submission-based collaborative writing project honoring the smaller voices in the blogging community… Project UnderBlog is a place where bloggers are accepted based on the power of their words and not on the reach of their numbers – where they can be heard, promoted, and celebrated no matter their size.”

14.  Scary Mommy – I had heard through the grapevine that Scary Mommy only took first run pieces, but when I interviewed founder, Jill Smokler, she said that they would indeed consider things you have previously posted to your own blog.  Again, be sure to indicate this when you submit.  They typically ask you to change the title and content slightly for SEO purposes.

“A parenting community for imperfect parents.”

15.  The Sun Magazine –  A highly respected magazine, this publication pays well for writing and gives contributors a free annual subscription!  Note: “We’re willing to read previously published works, though for reprints we pay only half our usual fee.”

“The Sun is an independent, ad-free monthly magazine (digital and print) that for nearly forty years has used words and photographs to invoke the splendor and heartache of being human.”

16.  What The Flicka? – Once you go through the approval process to become a contributor, they will reach out to get your recommendations of what they can syndicate from your existing blog.

“A haven for moms, sisters, women or just about anyone who could use a little pick me up, a little help, or a little company on the road trip of life.”  Topics include: “…life, children, family, cooking, beauty, fashion, books, the latest thing we are obsessed with, and of course, urban mom survival tips.“
