BCMGs, Remember You Can Report Your HOURS Anytime!

The old Volunteer/CEU Hours reporting forms are no longer being used.  You can now report your hours online on the Texas Master Gardener Volunteer Management System located on our new BCMG website.  If you have problems logging in, contact Inez Ornelas or Barbara Lutz.



Don’t forget to send in your Birdies for Charity pledge or donation.  It’s our only fundraiser, tax deductible and 100% comes back to BCMG!

Volunteers are still needed for construction and during the rodeo.  Visit the Rodeo page on the BCMG website for details on open volunteer activities, and if you are a Rodeo Volunteer to download the San Antonio Livestock Exposition Release & Indemnification Agreement.  (NOTE:  All BCMG rodeo volunteers must complete and have notarized the San Antonio Livestock Exposition Release and Indemnification Agreement.  You can download the form, have it notarized and send it to the BCMG office, or you get the form at the office [or download and bring in] and have Carol Law notarize it on Wednesdays or Fridays from 9a –2 pm.)

San Antonio Garden Center Clubs will host metalwork artist Christopher Voss and his presentation, A  Valentine’s Program, The Romance of Wrought Iron.  Hear about garden art and the blending of passion with practicality.  The meeting is free and open to the public.  Plant Exchange and Social at 9:30; meeting and presentation at 10am. 1 CEU for MGs.

Jim Johnson, Vegetable Specialist and member of the Guadalupe County Master Gardeners will present Grow Spring Vegetable Transplants from Seed: make your own grow light, grow spring vegetables from seeds, grow the right vegetables for the season, and grow your own tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. Mark Fanick, General Manager of Fanick’s Garden Center and Texas Nursery Nursery and Landscape Association (TNLA) Certified Nurseryman will share his Tips on Starting a Spring Garden at the monthly meeting of the Men’s Garden Club of San Antonio (free and open to the public).  1 CEU for MGs.

Spring Volunteer Orientation for the Children’s Vegetable Garden

First BCMG Educational Seminar of 2015

Ed Bradley, Master Gardener and Rosarian, will speak on Growing Healthy Roses, addressing the full spectrum of growing roses:  Types to plant, Feeding, Watering, Spraying, etc.  Since February is pruning time, emphasis will be on pruning and instructions on how to do it.   2 CEUs.   For more information, contact BCMG President Barbara Lutz.

Opportunities to Learn About Pruning Roses!

If you can’t attend the BCMG Educational Seminar on Feb 19th, members of the San Antonio Rose Society will demonstrate Proper Rose Pruning Techniques on these days:  Thu, Feb 12, 9am-Noon at the SA Garden Center, 3310 n. New Braunfels, 78209; Tue, Feb 17, 8am-Noon a the SA Botanical Garden, 555 Funston, 78209 with backup for bad weather date of Thu, Feb 19, 8am-Noon.

Also, the SA Rose Society’s meeting on Mon, Feb 9,from 7-9pm, at the SA Garden Center, 3310 N.New Braunfels will present Pruning Roses for Beautiful Blooms, a “hands-on” demonstration of proper pruning techniques for a variety of the different types of roses.  For more information, visit the SA Rose Society website, or email Peggy Jones.

Register Now for March Irrigation Efficiency Specialist Training

Hosted By: Bexar County Master Gardeners and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service

When:  Mon-Wed, Mar 23, 24, 25 (Register by Mar 11)

Where:  San Antonio Botanical Garden (SABOT), 555 Funston Place, 78209

This hands-on training will include practices for determining irrigation efficiency, setting controllers, soak and cycle method, minor irrigation repairs, system troubleshooting, catch can test, converting spray head irrigation to new water conserving head, converting spray irrigation to drip irrigation and many other water conservation practices.  Fee:  $200, includes manual, presentation materials, 2 lunches.  15 CEUs.  Details and registration information at the Dallas website.  Note:  David Rodriquez must sign a form to approve your registration.

Fruit Tree Planting Class & Canning Demonstration

What:  5th Annual Jammin’ Jams Fruit & Nut Tree Adoption
