Look for Your New BCMG Card

BCMG Membership cards are in the mail!  Your new membership card will entitle you to discounts at Fanick’s, Rainbow Gardens and Milberger’s. Also in the envelope, you will find a Birdies for Charity pledge form with a return envelope for your use. Support the BCMG with a check, or pledge, to Birdies for Charity this year!

Special BCMG Office Hours This Week

The BCMG office will be open next week  from 1pm to 3pm on Tuesday thru Friday, January 26, 27, 28, 29.  It’s good to call (210) 631-0404 before you come, just to be sure. [Note: Regular hours for Carol Law to be in the office are Wed and Friday from 9am – 2pm.]

URGENT Call for Rodeo Greeters! — Details on MG Calendar

Everyday during Rodeo volunteers are stationed at the barn entrance to greet and welcome guests as well as tally the number of people coming in.  Jack says, “It’s really the easiest job…that’s important for the Rodeo and HEB to see our contribution to the success of the Rodeo.”  Slots are available Feb 11 to 28 at various times for this critical position.  If interested, please email Suzan Bartholomew ASAP with your day/time preferences.

One volunteer is needed to make PowerPoint signs for the plant sales at the Rodeo.  Please contact President Jack Downey.

NEEDED:  Co-Leader for Hardberger Park Children’s Garden

We need a Master Gardener who can co-lead the Hardberger Park Children’s Garden.  The park workday with the children will be Tuesday.  The Hardberger Park folks are wonderful partners in this endeavor and have been very supportive in solving every issue concerning getting the park up and running.  Please contact President Jack Downey for more information.  Let’s help the children!

TOMORROW CVGP Work Party — Details on MG Calendar!

WHERE: San Antonio Botanical Garden –Children’s Vegetable Garden Program (CVGP), 555 Funston Road, San Antonio, TX 78209

Info:  Hello Everyone.  We will have a work-party this Thursday, January 28 at the Children’s Vegetable Garden Program located at the backside of the San Antonio Botanical Garden.  This is a great opportunity to get outside and exercise, get volunteer hours and learn some practical Horticulture concepts.  We will be doing some odd-ball chores throughout the garden including straighten up the tool sheds and behind the brown-fenced area, watering, harvesting, planting some onions, fertilizing, etc.  Wear appropriate work shoes; bring gloves and any extra helpers, too.  Bring some scissors and a harvest bag or two for spinach, carrots, celery, Asian greens, etc.  Any and all help would be appreciated.  THANKS FOR ALL THAT YOU DO AND HAVE DONE FOR THE HORTICULTURE PROGRAM IN SAN ANTONIO AND IN TEXAS!!!!!!!!

Volunteers for 2016 Spring Youth Garden Educator’s Training–Details on MG Calendar

When: Sat, Jan 30, 8am-5pm (for volunteers; actual event; 9am-4pm)

Where: Phil Hardberger Park West Urban Ecology Center, 8400 NW Military HWY, San Antonio TX 78231

Info:  This training day is designed for teachers, educators, and volunteers in support of Youth Gardening in the classroom and community. Approximately 25 volunteers are needed to help with plant sorting, presentation assistance, and to help the educators in attendance.  Job descriptions are detailed on the BCMG Volunteer Calendar (Jan 30th) at the BCMG website Members Page. Learn, Grow, Eat & Go! School Presentation Assistance

When: Feb 8 – April 22, Mondays thru Fridays (one hour weekly; time varies for each school)

Where:  Nine San Antonio Schools (See volunteer letter for locations and days)

Info: 1-2 volunteers are needed to help prepare and pass out veggies and meal samples, help organize students into groups, and help clean up during and after physical activity. Learn, Grow, Eat & Go! School Supply Prep

When:  Mondays, Feb 8 – April 25,  8:30-10:30am

Info: The Youth Gardens Program has adopted 10 schools around Bexar County to implement the new JMG Curriculum for Learn, Grow, Eat & Go! Need 1-2 volunteers to help prep food, sort handouts and organize activities for 700 students every week. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Ruby Zavala.

Help Dr Calvin Finch at the Wilson County Home & Garden Day–Details on MG Calendar

When: Sat, Mar 5, 11am-Noon (Actual Landscape Design School 8am-Noon)

Where: Floresville

Info:  Five volunteers with landscaping skills (perhaps MG Specialists or MGs who have completed Landscape Design School in College Station) to review the attendees’ plans and landscape ideas from 11am until noon. This fundraiser for the South Texas Alternative School Horticulture Program (which serves 13 school districts in 5 counties) will feature Dr Calvin Finch, Dr Jerry Parsons, and CEA Brian Davis as main speakers. Rodeo 2016 is around the corner, beginning Thursday, Feb 11 and running through Sunday, Feb 28.  Construction is already underway! Plan to be part of the excitement and help in the Little Buckaroo Tent, especially as a Greeter, a School Tour Leader, or at the MG Booth for plants sales. Check your calendar, select how you want to participate, and contact the individual coordinating that activity!  Let’s RODEO San Antonio!  Details on the BCMG Website!
