Thomas Hoepker uses HP Designjet Z3200 Photo Printer
Magnum Photographer Thomas Hoepker has traveled and documented the world for over 50 years. This has resulted in an amazing body of work which has been published in magazines all around the world. Owing to poor print quality, he was dissatisfied with dye-based inks. But this all changed when he was introduced to the HP Designjet Z3200, which has now become his printer of choice.
Hoepker uses the new HP 73 Chromatic Red ink and the HP 12-ink printing system which gives his prints rich colour saturation, while the HP Quad-Black Ink set produces stunning black-and-white prints. He believes that the new prints can now easily rival the old darkroom prints that he grew up with. He says, “The pigment printers are a big leap forward, especially when you think of the long life of the prints. They are projected to live up to 200 years. That’s pretty amazing.”
Hoepker takes consistency very seriously. “Consistency is very important, especially to my clients. I need to make sure the print is the same today as it was three years ago, and the same as in my book.” He appreciates the ease with which he can achieve precise profiling and calibration using the embedded spectrophotometer with i1 color technology. The printer supports around 50 different types of HP large-format printing materials. Hoepker considers this as a huge advantage and for exhibitions, he chooses the HP Professional Satin Photo Paper for its color accuracy.
Thomas Hoepker considers the quality of the Z-series printers to be nothing less than stunning and it has helped him explore new markets and ventures in digital printing. “I see digital as a great improvement. The quality of the Z-series printers is really stunning, and I have a new adventure and a new income stream!”
