5/4 WINNING NAP: SHAMROCK landed his second winning nap in three days with GOLDEN HORN (NAP) WON 5/4 in the Irish Champion Stakes on Saturday.

Delighted that Golden Horn won yesterday as he landed my nap but I couldn’t help feel a sense of frustration after the race. Maybe the race had promised too much….

FRUSTRATED that Gleneagles was pulled out and yet again we were denied the chance to see the Guineas and Derby winners clash.

FRUSTRATED that we never got to see how good Free Eagle was after he took a hefty bump from the winner deep inside the final furlong.

FRUSRATED that although Golden Horn won, he wasn’t impressive and after the York defeat and yesterday’s run seems to be showing the signs of a long season.

FRUSTRATED that the outcome of another big race was left to the stewards to deliberate on. After what happened at Doncaster there were plenty of people expecting another demotion.

On to Sunday and a tremendous St Leger day card at the Curragh. Also today, the Listowel Festival gets underway – the course passed a 7.30am inspection but more rain, expected to be heavy at times, is due to arrive at the course later today and officials are monitoring the situation.

There are five Group races on the Curragh card:

2:35 Moyglare Jewels Blandford Stakes (Fillies’ Group 2) (3yo+, Class 1, 1m 2f, 9 runners)

If this were a handicap it couldn’t have been framed any tighter for punters to solve with all the runners within a tight range on their official ratings. Three-year-olds have the best record but the most eye-catching stat of all is that eight of the last 10 favourites have won. I couldn’t say for certain what will even start favourite so that doesn’t really help much. I like the look of the James Fanshawe trained Ribbons who was a close up third in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes over course and distance last time out. Tapestry has the class but is back after a lengthy lay off.

3:05 Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes (Group 2) (3yo+, Class 1, 5f, 12 runners)

The UK raiders have an excellent record in this sprint but the challenge this year doesn’t look too strong on paper. The prize may well stay at home with a win for the Eddie Lynam trained Moviesta who had his first win since joining the stable here last time over the six furlong trip. He seems equally as effective over the minimum trip however.

3:40 Moyglare Stud Stakes (Fillies’ Group 1) (2yo, Class 1, 7f, 10 runners)

Strong renewal and Aidan O’Brien saddles three including Ballydoyle who won the Group 2 Debutante Stakes over course and distance last time out. With a name like that he’s clearly held in the highest regard! Preference though is for Dermot Weld’s Tanaza who is unbeaten in two starts and had plenty in hand when winning a Group 3 at Leopardstown last time out.

4:15 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes (Group 1) (2yo, Class 1, 7f, 6 runners)

Gleneagles won this last year, remember him ?? !! The O’Brien yard have a strong grip on this year’s renewal with three of the remaining six runners including the red hot favourite Air Force Blue who won narrowly on debut here before finishing second to Buratino in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. He turned that form around in style to win the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes here last time out (Buratino third) and gave the distinct impression he’d be suited by the extra furlong today.

4:50 Palmerstown House Estate Irish St. Leger (Group 1) (3yo+, Class 1, 1m 6f, 11 runners)

The only three-year-old in the race, Order Of St George, missed Doncaster yesterday in favour of this and looks a worthy favourite. He won the trial race here impressively by 7 1/2 lengths with a further 8 1/2 lengths back to the third. He is lightly raced and still capable of further improvement. The Luca Cumani trained Second Step has given the impression that this step-up in trip will suit and he looks the best of the UK raiders.
