Most of Vienna-based freelance photographer Klaus Pichler’s photographs in this series veer on the strange, yet are nevertheless interesting.

In Just the Two of Us, Pichler personally traveled to the homes of his subjects and took their photos while they’re in full costume right inside their residences, with very minimal to no changes in their surroundings. He wrote in his project statement, “Just the Two of Us deals with… the costumes and the people behind them.”

Pichler detailed that there are 10 different costume traditions depicted in Just the Two of Us, which he explained one by one here. But to give you an overview, these are Krampus; Perchten; Live Action Role Playing (LARP); Fasching, Fasnacht, Carnveval; Cosplay; Furries/Fursuiter; Medieval Knights; Full Contact Battle/Battle of the Nations; Star Wars/501st Legion; and Carnival of Venice. About 34 photos comprise this series.

Who hasn’t had the desire just to be someone else for a while? Dressing up is a way of creating an alter ego and a second skin which one’s behavior can be adjusted to. Regardless of the motivating factors which cause somebody to acquire a costume, the main principle remains the same: the civilian steps behind the mask and turns into somebody else. – Klaus Pichler
