Airy terrains shadowed by strains of pink and indigo frame an urbanscape populated with light-weight architecture. Ricky Allman employs his own ménage of color, line, and form to culminate a city, drawing the viewer to take in soft skies and then focus on the pocket-sized city at the heart of the pieces. Labored-over sunsets take over canvases in blown-out washes; while the same acrylic paints help to define the sharp white lines of Allman’s aerodynamic modern civilizations.
The Provo, Utah-raised artist and professor finds joy in dreaming up other worlds. On his website, he takes a humorous tone to his personal writing, citing a giant collection of podcasts in his biographical information.
Allman’s colorful outlook is prefaced by a tempestuous relationship with the Mormon Church, of which he was a devout believer until his mid-twenties. Often his apocalyptic end-of-the-world artworks serves as reminders of his childhood Sunday school teachings. Allman currently lives in Kansas City, Missouri and teaches art at the University of Missouri in Kansas City.
